Steve you are the man. Now looking forward to the 8' drop.
I did a few drop tests for my ipods with the HDD's - all unintentionally from 3' drops and all survived. But I am not gonna try the 8' drop though.

Ha! Not me...this thing is surprisingly resilient!
My ceilings are 8' here at my apartment. If I can get to one of our jobsites tomorrow and get on an 8' ladder again without too much attention to what I'm doing I'll have another video tomorrow night. All told, I have done multiple high drops on this thing and she keeps playing! My personal rig has the Yo Tank on it...this one didn't even have any tape around the edge to keep it from separating! I'm amazed that it didn't!
The Tarkan card stayed intact and the CF card...well...I didn't expect any problems...the biggest worry was the case surviving the falls.

I don't know of anyone who's broken down and laid out the cash for that card as of yet.

mSATA SSD issues with Rockbox
Guys please read one of the RB developer member's response to the issue:
http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php/topic,27337.0.html
"The easiest way to find and fix the issue in our ATA code that prevents it from working with these drives would be to loan one to a willing Rockbox developer, probably
If the original firmware works, then Rockbox *should* work as well, and if not this is a bug; but we likely can't fix it without being able to try various changes on the device in question, so, until someone who knows how the Rockbox code works, and how ATA works, has one of these devices in their hands it's unlikely to be resolved.
I updated our ATA code to support drives with large physical sectors some time ago, and this resolved issues with a large class of rotating disks; presumably the SSDs are objecting to some setup we are doing or have other requirements that we don't know about."
Now can one of your guys who have tried the mSATA drives can loan yours to the RB developer to resolve the issue?

This is fun - but the player is not running. The risk of HDD failure from a drop is substantially reduced when the heads are not active and are hence not over the platters in the drive. Most HDD failures from impacts are from the heads bouncing against the platters and scratching the platter surface...not from anything "breaking" inside them. When the unit is playing...and especially when you are seeking around to find something and then drop it - THAT is when it is most at risk.

I have a second iPod video that I can mail to the developer but I do not have the SSD or mSATA drive to send with it.
Maybe I can mail my iPod and someone else can mail the SSD/mSATA drive?
I am more than willing to do this.

With the music on a CF card...it won't matter if it's playing or not...there are no moving parts. I know the whole..unless the hard drive is active thing...I can tell you from experience that that is total BS. I've had hard drives damaged from falls of less than 3'.
Regardless...IF your HD isn't working any longer...you can cheaply replace it with an iFlash card and a CF card.
D...I dropped that iPod 4 times one after another. One before filming, and three filming. I fully believe you can throw this thing in the air while playing and it will land, and keep playing! LOL

I don't think it's appropriate to expect one of the Rockbox devs to assemble a unit to do the requisite troubleshooting to fix this issue. Besides, he specifically mentioned that if the combo wouldn't work on Apple firmware, then there was no expectation that it would (or could) work with Rockbox, and they would not be interested in addressing it. So, in short, one of us needs to assemble a unit, ensuring that it does function properly on Apple firmware, before sending it to a dev.

In that case I can mail my 160gb 5.5th Gen iPod to anyone who is willing to mail with it the SSD drive to the Rockbox dev.

I think what he's trying to say is that...they don't do work on people's iPods bro. They said it wouldn't work...that's it. Unless you're donating it to them forever...I'd give up on anyone "sending" it to them for you.

No, they DIDN'T say that!
Here's what they said:

i.e.: If it works with the Apple firmware, then there's a bug somewhere in their code that doesn't allow Rockbox to work. They need the actual combination we are trying to make work, so they can debug their code.
Here was his last statement:

Yes, though it would be easier if someone sent me an entire modded player (that already works in the Apple firmware) so I don't have to take mine apart (my ipodvideo is my main mp3 player)
This is still open for a solution.
