Has this been mentioned on here before? Don't remember noticing it. (I've no connection to whoever these people are, not shilling this, or particularly recommending it, honest! Just noticed someone selling an ipod with it on Ebay, and was intrigued by the custom back-plate as much as anything - I'm not actually interested in bluetooth myself, can't be bothered with wireless, but had thought for a while there was milage in more aftermarket mods for the ipod, including a better/larger housing, and thought this at least _looks_ pretty cool, aesthetically-speaking)

(What I _would_ find really useful would be a means of synching with USB-C speeds, but I presume that's beyond what a simple mod could do - that the above adds a USB-C port I presume doesn't actually change the speed of data transfer, just the plug type).
I think I've seen this mentioned on the iPod subreddit (r/ipod) before. As for changing the speeds of transfer, I don't think that's possible. The usb-c connector still runs USB 2.0 speeds. I'm not sure the hardware will even support the newer speeds without extreme mods.

It's kind of cool, but only works with one version, and not the version I'd prefer to use it with. While I have a classic ipod here, and managed to open it once to update the battery and put sd memory in, it's such a pita to do that I'll never do it again. BTW there's a fairly active ipod user/modding group on reddit, much more activity than you'll find here.

Hadnt seen this, but it looks pretty cool. $150 USD which isnt exactly cheap, but also isnt all that bad when you consider what that would get you if you were to buy a new mp3 player (which isnt all that much at that price point). And it includes a 2000mAh battery.

Im with you, i doubt the transfer speed is limited by the connector, so doing the soldering to add the sync options via USB-C probably wont increase data transfer, but it might be nice to try just to get away from the old 30 pin connectors.

Im intrigued. Looks like theyve got some other stuff too (like an SD card adapter that's not Tarkan's) so im gonna have to browse around their site a bit more.

Good find!

The data-transfer speed is the biggest limitation on the ipod design, that really gives away its age as 'legacy tech'. It now takes up to 36 hours for me to do a complete initial sync of my entire library!

I dont even know, i dont keep track of it! Im coming up on 40k tracks. It takes a while. Still use my rockbox'ed 6th gen in the garage most every day, altho i have a Fiio for in the truck or at work, because bluetooth.

Having had two "2000mah" batteries in modded ipods fail recently and need to be replaced, what I'd most like to see is some means of fitting a more commonly-available, more 'standard' battery type. At some point the custom ipod batteries will cease to be manufactured, I'm sure. And as rechargeables don't last forever in storage, there's no way of stockpiling the things.

In one case the damn battery cable fractured, rendering the battery useless - really don't think I'd feel confident trying to resolder such a thing - soldering and liPo batteries doesn't seem like a healthy combination. Would be nice if someone would manufacture some adapter that could connect the ipod-type ribbon cable to a more easily-available battery, and/or a custom back plate that would accommodate different battery styles.

It annoyed me back in the past, when electronic gadgets of all kinds shifted to use custom built-in rechargable batteries rather than the traditional user-replaceable types. Struck me as a stupid short-sighted choice even then.

Get yourself over to the Reddit iPod subs. Lots of lively talk there!

I'm kind of assuming by the time the demand for aftermarket batteries drops to near nothing, most iPods will have bitten the dust anyway. Another 10 years maybe? 20?

I did some tests. My iPod 6 with HDD works as before, no matter if formatted by Mac or PC, with or without rockbox it does mount in Sequoia. My iPods 7 with Tarkan microSD adapter do only mount when formatted by Mac. So I cannot use rocbbox on them and mount them to mac. My workaround is to sync the files viaWindows VM. If somebody else has a better solution please let me know.

Hello everyone,

I just created a python package to extract playlists and cover artwork from iTunes libraries. I thought some of you might be interested.

See this post for details: Post #2,433 of 2,433

Hey everyone, just got a new kingspec SSD for my iPod classic 6th gen. iPod OS works fine but I'm having problems with rockbox. It won't boot no matter what I've tried. It just gives ATA error -2147483605. It works with another intenso ssd I tried but it's 2280 and won't fit inside.
I've tried many times to format it with different settings but it won't work. I've also tried many rockbox versions.

If anyone has any ideas on how to fix this please let me know

It will also output digital, but only in USB device mode, which is compatible with a very small number of external DACs.
The Gen. 5.5 is not capable of USB host mode, that capability starts with the Gen.6 Classic which is compatible with a much wider range of DACs.
Yeah you are right about the Gen 5.5. But there are MFI ones compatible from 6 and up. I've seen a guy demonstrating them:

Has anyone had any luck with repairing/replacing the ribbon cable on one of the custom batteries? Had lots of them now where the contact bit at the end (that goes into the battery connector on the logic board) fractured and snapped off the cable. Frustrating that that tiny bit of cable coming off renders the entire battery useless. Only thing I can think of is to replace the entire cable (I have _loads_ of old standard ipod batteries that I could take a cable from), but that means soldering a new cable to the contacts on the battery and I don't really feel that soldering and lipo batteries are likely to go well together. Anyone done anything like that successfully (without starting a fire!) ? Feel safer/easier if one could cut the existing cable in half and somehow attach a new half to the end of it, but is there a good/reliable way to do that?

Hey guys,
I opened up my iPod Video 5.5G in order to fix the middle button and clean it up a little bit. Anyway, when I put everything back together it turns out the headphones work only on the left side. I obviously tried with different headphones and got exactly the same results. Needless to say too, everything was working right before.
The thing is that if I insert the headphones, say, not to the very end but to half of the channel, the headphones will work on both sides, but it must be at a very specific position, which is not practical.
Anyway, I'm guessing that when I dismantled the iPod I might misplaced something by a bit or broken something? Or perhaps I pressed too hard something I was not supposed to? (it would be weird though since I think I was careful).
In any case, what could I check or try, before importing new parts? :(

Given that it works depending on the position of the headphone plug, that's good news, insofar as it means it's the headphone socket that's faulty (and not a circuit on the logic board or the headphone cable connector on the logic board - both of which would be more expensive problems to solve).

Simplest solution is just to buy a new headphone socket/hold switch assembly and replace it.

If you have an ipod dock or an external portable amp thing you could first check that it is only the headphone assembly that's the problem by playing it through the 30-pin output and confirming that the sound works OK from that output.
