Official Ipod Video / Classic 5g+5.5g+6g+6.5g+7g SSD Mod thread

  Zimmeruski,

For a while I thought my click wheel had gone bonkers.  I have a Frankenstein 5.5 with the tarkan SD card adaptor and pieces from two different units (both 5.5g).

I eventually copied my music off the machine, restored it in itunes, added rockbox back in, ran a special utility I needed to allow dual booting, and got things going again.

One thing I discovered is that to add files one needs to boot back into itunes, use the unit in disc mode, then reboot back to rockbox when ready to play new files that befuddle the stock os.

My click wheel returned to normal using that procedure.

Out of curiosity, does your pause switch work correctly?  It is really easy to break the connector for that when you open the unit.  That can cause issues I suspect.

Your mileage may vary.

I just put Rockbox back on the iPod. Click wheel not working there either - I suspect it must be a hardware thing. I can't tell if my pause button works at all. Unless you meant hold switch? It works just fine as far as I can tell... when it's on it doesn't reset, when it's off I can use the Menu+Select buttons to reset.

It's funny because I can soft reset until the cows come home, but once the software is fired up the Select button just suddenly stops working.

You know the cable is in all the way when you can hardly see the two painted white markers on the cable. The same for the disk cable.

Well, the problem I had (still have) is using enough force to get the cable in that far without it (the cable) fracturing, especially if removing and replacing it several times.  Or if you instead try to loosen the connector so as to reduce risk of damaging battery cable, you risk instead breaking the connector.

Normally you are supposed to see the two white stripes on the cable if the battery connector is closed. If it's open you have to insert the cable far enough so that you can still just see one white stripe. This of course assumes that you have opened the connector far enough. I often use an iPod opening tool to gently pull it open. That being said I found it weird that you broke so much connectors until I broke two of them last week (luckily on broken motherboards).

I broke two connectors but fortunately Tarkan was nice enough to help me repair one of them.  How it was done is beyond me.  It turned out that I blew up the other motherboard by the way, otherwise it was to be my gift to him for helping out.

Glad to know that I was not the only one with fat fingers. What is the charge to fix connectors, now that I have two motherboards?

Very general ipod-mod-related question, if anyone knows...

Does the 5th gen have such lower battery life than the 6/7th gen solely because of the lower-density hard-drive, or are the actual motherboard components more power-hungry?  If they had the same hard-drive (or ssd) how similar would their battery run-times be?  Anyone know?

Ta.

You can build the 5.5th and make it look like the Classic, all you need is the mid frame, front cover and if you chose a classic clickwheel. (I've done this before)

What do you mean by the Mid frame?  I just bought bought a 5.5g 80gb with a broken clickwheel and headphone jack.  I want to restore it to look as much as the classic as possible.  Can you give a list of things from a site like http://www.idemigods.com/?  Can the back case be replaced too?

Edit:  The center button is broken, not the actual click wheel.  It will work if I press it real hard and does not click at all.  I still want to replace the click wheel though.

Thanks.  Will that headphone/hold switch assembly work in the 5.5g?

Thanks again.  One last question.  The center button, is that attached to any part of the clickwheel?  If the mechanism on the button itself is broken what needs to be replaced?  I see the link above has a replacement cover so I am just making sure.
The center button is not attached, just secured in place inside the click-wheel.

**** YOU, IPOD!
I keep getting just over 200GB transferred and then it just goes blank and everything disappears. Y-cable should be here tomorrow. *Really* hoping that fixes things. If not, I'll probably break down and buy a 5gen board so I can just load it up externally.

Hope it works, if not then I've got an old 5g you can have.

Can anyone recommend me an affordable 500GB mSATA drive for my classic

MyDigitalSSD 480GB (512GB) 50mm BP4 Eco mSATA SSD SATA 6G from Amazon seems to be the cheapest priced one.

This drive has been confirmed to work and is apparently one of the drives that are rather energy efficient. Which also means it doesn't heat up that much.
