Also, what is the consensus of everyone regarding the compatibility of a 256gb ssd zif to work in a 7th gen ipod classic? I love the thinness of it and I would rather not have to use the 240gb thick ipod back

 thanks

5.5G iPods have thin backplate options too! Just use a 30GB backplate. In fact it is compulsory with the SSD, otherwise it won't be secured enough inside.

I have a 7G Classic and tried to put a Super Talent 256GB ZIF SSD and it just won't work. It works perfectly though in my 60GB 5G iPod Video, both with the OF and Rockbox.

Damn!!! That's what I want to do. It doesn't work at all? Or are you getting any error messages?

Quote in 1st post of this thread:
Super Talent ZT2  -  Available in 32GB, 64GB, 128GB (256GB is 5V it will not work)

Maybe the the voltage of the ZT2 isn't quite 5V, and the older iPod has a higher tolerance beyond 3.3V...

I get a big red X in a red circle. It is like there is no drive connected. The Super Talent 256GB ZIF SSD runs on 3.3V.  Super Talent engineering confirmed this to me. Also see their website. I have no idea why it does not work.

No, I haven't tried to restore it because I couldn't get the screen that would ask me to. Instead, I put a Toshiba 240GB HDD and when I did, I got the white screen that asked me to connect to iTunes and restore the iPod. The 240GB HDD works flawlessly. I had to purchase a deeper backplate to accommodate the drive in the 7G.

I'm interested in the mod myself for my 6.5G. I checked a couple of sites that list it as 5V too, maybe to be on the safe side... Super Talent's own website lists it as "3.3V ± 10%" and that 10% extra may be actual & substantial enough to put it outside the 7G power envelope, while the older one can still handle it.

iPod Classic 7g 160 with SuperTalent 256GB SSD: I tried the same combination to no avail.

Tried dropping the raw drive in and got the big red X.
Tried formatting in the PC to FAT32 - still a big red X.

Unit would not enter disk mode in either instance.

I already had a plan for what to do with the SuperTalent drive if things did not work out and turned it into supplemental storage for my tablet.

In the interim, I am going to try the (painfully expensive) 240GB Kevlar drive because:
1) The problem may (or may not) have been with power, and the Kevlar has tighter specs and lower power needs
2) The problem may (or may not) have been with the capacity, since 240gb seems to be an upper limit on the larger units anyway.
(I had hoped to merely "lose" 16GB and have 240GB usable with the SuperTalent drive).

It will be a while before my wallet recovers from the last experiment, however - so it will be a couple of months before I try this again.
