Obscure Chinese DAPs

The volume dial looks like it's an analogue volume pot, and I've learned to hate analogue pots over the years since digital volume control is becoming more and more common.

Why's that? Other than the low vol. imbalance - which with my gear is too low to be an issue - I find analogue to work pretty well

I often like to listen at really low volume levels where imbalance does become an issue. And I like the feeling of knowing that there is no imbalance issue. Digital volume control and digitally controlled analogue volume control rule and have been the best development in the past 1.5 decades, found in much more devices than longer ago. And without the bit depth loss of course.
Nah, since there are sources with really good and super fine-grained digital volume control, I shudder when I think that I used to like analogue volume control. I just like the knowledge of having perfect channel balance at any level.

Ooh. Now that looks like a very nice piece of kit. Good specs, DSD playback, and an attractive design (if you like the serious, industrial, look).

I shall be interested to see if anyone posts impressions of it.

What really catched my eyes :

a. ESS 9018
b. Docking station with double xlr
c. 6.3 plus 3.5mm connectors
d. The whole package for $300, I'm sold

Thanks to Pinoyman for showing me this

Ha ha, please do.

Yeah I agree. There are some good sounding ones as far as I understand (I'm quite impressed by the sound on the $20 Idealist S1813 myself) but the real challenge seem to be to get good enough UI and stability fw wise.

What? A 20$ player with more than decent sound????
I'm hooked!
Can someone describe me the sound or give me a link that review it please?
I'm waiting for the Ruizu X02 just for fun...wonder how they compare too.

I'm happy to find this thread, was going to start one to have more impressions about unknown chinese DAP!

I had the Ruizu x02 when I got the Idealist s1813 (the x02 died shortly after) and the Idealist has a much better sound IMO. the x02 had a noticeable bass roll off. I think there's some unit/batch variations on it though. The biggest asset on the x02 was definitely the great battery life, I used it when travelling and that was great. The Idealist has better bass and treble extension, better clarity ana nice lean and clean sound. Unfortunately it uses the same lousy UI as the x02.

Thanks for the reply.
Look very interesting! Kind of regret to have buy the Ruizu as I'm more about sound than battery life.
Is it better than Sansa clip and Sony media player?

Wonder if anybody hear the ONN X5 too and how it compare.
For now the real most have sub 50$ player look like to be the Xduoo X2.
I got the X3 3 days ago and really like him for easy to drive earphones.

iBasso doesn't really count as 'obscure', but I think this interesting DAP still deserves a brief mention, here:

http://www.head-fi.org/t/806333/mini-audio-ma01-spec-photos-dx100-successor

EDIT - turns out it's NOT an iBasso product at all! (confirmed by Paul from iBasso)

So, at this stage, it isn't clear who makes the Mini-Audio MA10 - i guess that makes it an 'Obscure' Chinese DAP, after all!

I've never really liked the sound of the Clip so for me it's definately better. Never heard any Sony media player, sorry.

May i ask you if the idealist has FLAC support?

From the description i read only about MP3, WMA and WAV support.

Thanks!

Yes, it supports flac.
