Absolutely can't wait for impressions! I haven't been this excited about a headphone since I joined this site a couple years ago. Hopefully they are great for the money...I'd love to experiment with modding them too!

I'm in. Someone's got to do a full review.

Good, I was hoping I wouldn't have to spend $1500 for the Ether.  These may be to the Ether what the Ether is to the HE1K, with the right setup.  I'm really amazed how close my modded HE-400 sounds compared to my modded HE-6.  I'll have less that $1500 combined in all four, HE-6, HE-4, HE-400 and now the HE-400S......got more than $2000 into a few cables though, but they sure do make those cheap Hifiman headphones sound fantastic!  IMO......

HE-400 mods include, Focus Pads, shelf liner, grill mod (same as HE-6, HE-4), and HE-6 cable to an amp with some power, ie, speaker amp etc.

Forgot to mention, I added Audeze Vegan Pads to the HE-6, so now it is a little further ahead.  I won't be putting $80 pads on my HE-400 or HE-400S, but the do make for improved sound and comfort!

I wouldn't rule out a pair of Audeze pads for the 400s if this hp turns out to be the real deal.

I always buy mid-fi headphones because the law of diminishing returns apply strongly to headphone prices. Does LCD-3 sound 400% better than Oppo PM-3? Hell no. Do Beyer T90 and HD700 sound better than Fidelio X2? No, I think that Fidelio X2 sounds better than them actually (some like the cold, analytical nature of T90, I dislike it).

Headphones are always a preference thing. For me, a headphone does not have to be perfect as long as I like the tonality and it doesn't completely suck at any one thing.

I hope these are the tuning successor to the HE-400, after selling mine I realized I would miss the planar bass impact of them. I like the 2.5mm mono plugs and the silver colour. Hopefully if they meet expectations they aren't too expensive in Canada due to the exchange rates.

The video that Tyll Hertsens made at the Newport show showed the headphone side plug not quite a mono plug with two rings. The closest that comes to mind if you need a 4-pin XLR would be the HD700 headphone cable and the OPPO as I found out later as it seems.
