MrSpeakers Alpha PRIME: Impressions and Discussion Thread

It should be very good. You can't go wrong with Violectric amps. These headphones aren't going to be that difficult to amp providing you meet the minimum power requirements. As they have a neutral character and don't need any taming from the amp you just have to pick something that fits the signature you're after. The V200 is laid back. Too laid back for some but I liked it.

I am running a V200 with AP in my nightstand system and Inreally like the sound. I think they complement each other quite nice.

IMO the V200 has a sound on the warmer sound of Solid State and at least just after I received the AP to my taste were a little on the bright side. Using them as a combo they complement each other producing a nice balanced sound with good extension and both ends and great midrange. I think for the price the V200 is a great little amp. I used to have the GS-1 in that place and had them both at the same time. Kept the V200 and sold the GS-1.

i have the primes for some days now and fuel them with iphone and hifi m8 through cck. first days i like a lot about the sound. good separation, lots of energy, air but voices were a little recessed and i felt that i heard that better on cheaper phones. today i realized that on each driver there were two doggie treats installed from the previous owner. i removed them and today i love the sound. same energy but better highs and voices.

bass is very impressing aswell. on most tracks i use one level of bass boost on the m8 and it kicks. comfort is very good aswell but if you are sensitive like me you will feel pressure around your ears after some hours. pads are very soft so i guess it will hurt just to a very few people.

so far i am very satisfied with the most expensive headphone/dac/amp combo I ever had. this is far above the B&W P7 and Sony 7520, the best headphones I had before. so thank you head-fi and the people in this thread emptying my wallet and filling my ears with very fine tunes.

I'm glad that they sound great off the hifi-m8. That has been on my radar for a long time.

Sounds like a good experience moving from the mid-fi closed portable cans to the summit-fi. I am still at the Alpha Dog stage but they do vocals perfectly and have such a great tone with plenty of body through the mid range.

I was wondering what the Sony 7520's sounded like but if the AP's are a great leap ahead there is no reason for me to look back. Hope your wallet recovers :)

Does anyone here listen to any ASMR videos by chance? besides the relaxation and tingles they can provide, they are a great experience on great headphones, esp to show off/test imaging and detail.

heres a link to a new video by a very good asmr channel that makes extremely high quality audio asmr videos/bandcamp albums

these are my go to when testing a headphone's soundstage and imaging, and what I used to test the difference between the hd800, he-560, lcd-2, and alpha prime's soundstages/imaging.

enjoy :)

(btw these videos may make you drowsy and sleepy, so just be aware of that lol)

I wonder if Dan sends some them out with the treats pre-fitted.

I wonder if Dan sends some of them out with the treats pre-fitted.

Edit: he does. I've just discovered a couple in mine. It didn't occur to me to check until I read all these posts about distant vocals.

wow, that surprises me a lot. wouldn't have thought these are preinstalled. I still like them better without but it might be my brain messing with me telling me things I like to hear right now :D that is always the worst part about new headphones - you can't trust your own brain...

I have dots installed but no doggie treats. Both of my treats(two sets) are still in the box they came in (unless those are extras)

I am spending time with the Alpha Prime's and the new Cavalli Audio Liquid Crimson. I am a happy camper!
