Hole diameter in Q701 is 6,5 cm. Ear pad diameter is 11 cm. Ear pad depth at thinnest spot is about 1,8 cm, at thickest part about 3 cm.

I don't think that 2 mm will clip my ear, so I think I'll be ok

Thanks!

I have HD558' too, which I think have identical pads to 555's, and I feel Q701 has more space inside the cups. HD558's touches my ears, Q701 don't at all. They're also much lighter, have less clamping force and are useful if you want to dig holes at the top of your skull. :p

I'm really having a tough time deciding which to get, the 701's or 702. At first I preferred the unique and elegant color of the 701's but I recently found out the 702's were a "midnight navy" instead of the black I thought it was... hmmmmm

Frankly, I bought a pair of Q701 because they came with two cables and one cable was 20 feet long.  In addition, you can also swap cables.
Black Q701s look pretty good. It really is Black.

Yup, 558 should be pretty much identical. I dislike clamping, so that's good to hear. And I read very carefully about the holes your skull receives, so I'm readying some foam and duct tape

60/40 rosin core will work just fine.

How about some ultra expensive Audiophile solder that costs more than the 'phones?   LOL!

In my experience, burn in and recable will affect the sound about .05%. Amp and dac are 10%, the other 89.95% are the choice of headphone and the quality of the mix/mastering of the recordings.

In case of the K70X, I think amp and DAC are more than 10% improvement...with a good rig you'll be able to hear most of the music production nuances as intended compare to, let say connecting the K70X directly to the PC build in sound card.

Not trying to start a war here, but I would say that amp and DAC are closer to 50%.
I can plug my Q701s into an iPod, iPad or my Notebook.  I can listen to music at a reasonable volume, but the sound is very compromised.  Somewhat dull and lifeless.
You can argue that the 'phones will let you hear how bad an iPod sounds.
Good equipment really brings the music to life and shows you how good the 'phones can sound.

.005% improvement on burn-in and recable?
For a K702 recable, i'd say the improvements are under 5% for sure. Maybe around 3%. The only reason I felt this is that the internal wires are still there and degrading your nice new cable.
It's like using a $5 radio shack extension cable on a $200 Cardas cable. Now if it went straight to the drivers it'd be a much larger improvement.

Now, let's not get into the cable debate, but I'd say recabling an HD-598 or HD-600 is like a 10% improvement.

I think one thing i've noticed lately is a lot of people driving the K702/Q701 from portable amps. Now I'm sure it sounds great, but is it really putting the K702 at 100%? This i'd like to now..I can't imagine it happening.
Even my Q701 can be driven from the Total Airhead, but i'd never use it as my main setup for it. Just not the same.

Having recabled the HD-600. It's a negligible difference. Entirely inaudible on any of the test rigs I have tried (numerous at a wide variety of price points).

I stand by my numbers above, based on personal experience, and backed by theory and measurement.

Back to K701, there was a night and day difference on the performance of my K701 between a high gain and low switch of just a simple Fiio E9. Aggressive, forceful, shouting, forward, less bass, no decay, sharp and piercing highs,... on high gain switch. Soundstage presence, laidback, more bass, 3D, balanced, smooth highs,... on a low gain switch. I was really surprised! A Fiio E9 at low gain switch is an entry way towards appreciating the strengths and capabilities of K701. Now, this is really what K701 is, most of my CDs came to life. Really awesome.

I would like to thanks Headfonia for helping me this tip. It opened my K701 to a new level unexpectedly. I thought of buying a new amp but now I am holding it first. Thanks Headfonia! For those who would like to know the details of the tip I've found very helpful, simply click the link below.

Hi, I recently got myself a pair of AKGs K701s.
Rather than add to the exhaustive threads on amp recommendations, I thought it better to post here.
I want a solid state amp ( or amp/dac) under $300 (£200) either portable or desktop. No DIY, nor Tubing. About to go to University, simply not reasonable.  Though if you really insist on tube amps - hybrids maybe; I might consider it.
Preferably on amazon UK as I have £100 credit, as I currently have no income.
Some ideas:

1. Fiio E7 + E9 Combo: £100 ($200)
2. Arcam rPac £150 ($250)
3. Graham Slee Novo  ($300)

Any advice on these choices would be appreciated, and any that fit my criteria- and the headphone- would be great :)

On Amazon UK - the Matrix Cube would be a good option. Decent amp with decent Dac.

The rPac is promising, but I have never seen or heard one.

The AudioEngine D1 is also quite a good bargain.
