The hearing abilities of headphone users play a similar role that "room treatments" do when it comes to speakers, I think. Clearly you need something that sounds flat to you. Perhaps headphones should be sold with age ratings, like movies are.

I just tested out the K701 and I instantly fell in love with it, particularly the wide sound stage. I'm about to order one from eBay (since they go for ridiculous prices in Japan due to an anime appearance), but I don't have an amp yet. Will the Go-Vibe Petite be enough for the K701? I ask because there's a Head-Fier from Japan selling his and I might pick it up if it's good enough for the K701.

No, I do not believe a portable will be your best option. It will benefit but will not get the 70x to do what they can. Good voltage swing (more than 12v) and ample current reserves means a quality home amp is needed. There are many out there that can drive the 70x respectably but you should expect to match your source and amp design with your needs and music type.

Portables are handy for IEMs and portables but not so well for most full sized cans. Grados being an exception.

Although I listen to mostly instrumental classical, I decided to listen to some vocals tonight. And oh boy! The K701 is heavenly with female vocals. I am listening, agape with admiration, as I
write this.

I've had mine for a few months and I must say they blow most of my other phones away. Oh and I'm 22...

I am ~ 27 and can hear upto 16 Khz/15Khz(left ear/right ear)

And I never find the K701 to cause hearing fatigue. The spike in the upper mids/lower treble isn't harsh... it just opens a small window of extra clarity.. but with some poor recordings that spike makes everything sound cold and dry... but good Deutsche Gramophone recordings shine nevertheless.

As for burn-in, further use continues to improve my K701 and now they sound fine with "Medium" gain on my Ultra Micro... (Previously, anything less than High Gain would make them sound cold, distant and boring)

I wonder: Do people with hearing upto 20Khz find the K701 to be harsh?
