Got the stock cables reterminated to 4pin XLR and thought it would tighten the bass.
But I'm pleasantly surprised to report that besides the bass tightening up, I have found three additional bonus features
wink.gif

1. Soundstage width has increased
2. Unnecessary sibilance has vanished.
3. Treble energy has reduced slightly.

Has anyone had a similar experience.

your amplifier is SS or tubes?
i tried mine versions with two solid state amplifiers: one in balanced and se mode and my beta in balanced mode.
i never found sibilance in this headphone but the great benefit with balanced mode is the soundstage and a better balance.
the headphone is sensible but need energy
just my opinion
p.s.: i forgot one thing. the stock cable is very good but a aftermarket cable improves the detail

I agree with you. I recabled the ones I used to own with the Zeus and they improved significantly. The bass got tighter and nto overwhelming the rest of the frequencies. The trabled go better detail and the midrange got cleared of the nasal effect in the vocals. In addition to that the soundstage got expanded.

At the moment am using them with RSA 71B but they're just spectacular with the Pinnacle.

Just got hold of a pair of these wonderful phones a couple of days ago!

Never harsh, always full sound, sounds amazing with everything I throw at them :)

I don´t think my LCD 2.2 will get very much head time from now on ^^

Can you get sound by wiggeling/manipulating the cable right after the plug ??
or the same procedure at the cup ??
Always a good thing to find out where the fault is, it is usually in the plug..

It is not difficult to take them apart, but it is wood and the screws are metal and you need to be carefull so that you do not destroy the holes in the wood, if you do the screws ill not have anything to grip in..
I have made a recable of mine there is a link to the thread right here http://hoved-fi.dk/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=2207
Hope it helps..

Claus-DK,

I did try to manipulate the cable but sadly the problem doesn't appear to be the cable.

Just checked your recabling thread (thanks for the link!) and it will no doubt be be of great value during my repair journey, however, could you say how you managed to remove the leather pads (the first pic shows the cans with pads already removed)?

I checked the cable with an ohmmeter and unfortunately the cable is good. The problem is in the driver itself (the other one measured correctly). My headphones are officially dead.

They served me well throughout the years!

Claus-DK,

I'll first try to contact JVC and see what my options are (if any). Maybe there's still some hope...

They were such good cans, loved the strong, full bodied bass, and their acoustic and involving presentation.

I understand fully, I love mine, also why I want to buy a broken set for spareparts so that they can last till I draw my last breath..
They must have new drivers at JVC, as the new DX2000 share drivers so good luck with a repair, I hope it will be a success, you should buy two drivers otherwise they will probably sound strange..
