As I read though the article, I had some questions regarding the particular modifications, too.  Some of the people who performed the modifications appeared to have documented their process to some degree.  I did note, though, that the 2nd place winner in the best sound category, LFF, didn't have a link to the modification features that were provided to his winning pair.  My mind then thought a moment and wondered if Tyll were to slightly shift one of the ear pads aside and look at the screw slots to see if LFF had applied some super glue to prevent the modified cans from being opened?  Hmm ...

Putting my little jest aside, I do keep all of this in perspective as much as I can because it is a fun hobby and I want it to remain just that - FUN !!

Oh come on, everyone knows it's epoxied shut around the outer lip (which I actually think is a good idea)

But seriously, whenever I think I'm done modding my pair I'll probably epoxy around the outer edge and over the screw holes and pray the improved seal increases sub bass a tiny bit

I'm getting my T50 in a day or two. I'm going to burn them in for about a week and after that I might start experimenting. I already have the 840 pads for my M50s so I'll use those. Can't wait.

Would LFF or purrin care to explain why Tyll's measurements for the Paradox look so different than what purrin measured? When purrin measured them, they were very flat. Tyll's measurements aren't nearly as flat.

Yes, I know that different systems are being used for the measurements, but what is causing the differences? Which is a more accurate representation of what we'd actually hear?

Was it the exact same pair of headphones?  I believe that is a question worth asking in this mix, too.

Wow, finally got a chance to look at Tyll's measurements for my pair. Did a lot better than I expected.

Has anyone started a thread to post our measurements or should we just add to this thread (for T50's only) ?

Is it posted on the data sheet download page? Because I can't find it on there if it is (I might be stupid). If not, do you have a link?

Hey guys, take a look at the measurement of dogwan's t50RP and LFF's t50RP no sock and w/sock (which i assume the earlier version of Paradox). THEY LOOK INCREDIBLE SIMILAR!!!
blink.gif
. even 30hz square wave, 300hz square wave, FR, THD noise, impulse response ... even the dip or peak. Although LFF's pairs do look better but there's only little different.

Dogwan's configuration: http://www.head-fi.org/t/452404/just-listened-to-some-fostex-t50rps-today-wow/4680#post_7883860

You answered the question yourself. Very different measurement systems. As for which is more accurate....I don't know. When you listen to headphones, which FR does it most sound like?

They do look similar! Funny because I tried sponge and it did NOT give me a Paradox sound at all. It give me a fun, bass heavy sound but nothing close to neutral and flat. Very interesting.

The only difference between the sock and no sock is just that...one has a sock to hold the pads in place, the other did not. Otherwise than that...all the same.

Hmmm, I wouldn't say mine are bass heavy at all. The bass is nice and tight, but not overbearing.

I know a couple people have tried sponges and not been impressed. I wonder if it comes down to the type of sponge and the implementation. Mine is a very thin (2mm) slice used as additional damping for the driver. Also notice it's a particular brand that is "natural vegetable cellulose".

FWIW, I'm actually surprised at the results of Tyll's measurements. I knew I was happy with the sound, but didn't know how much of that was due to DIY pride.

I wasn't saying your headphones were bass heavy....I was saying that when I tried sponge, all I got was fun bloat.

I also tried various types...porous...not so porous...natural...synthetic...thin...thick...multiple layers...etc. I have tried more variations than the total amount of mods posted on this thread and nothing gave me that neutral sound except my current mod. Kudos to you for finding a sponge that worked!
