You answered the question yourself. Very different measurement systems. As for which is more accurate....I don't know. When you listen to headphones, which FR does it most sound like?

Perhaps I didn't phrase my question correctly. I'm aware they're different, but I'm wondering what specific differences about the measuring systems would cause different measurements. Saying, "They're different, therefore they will produce different results." is a bit vague and not always true. Surely one system is more accurate than the other, at least in specific cases if not overall. Of course, maybe this question can't be adequately answered.

It's hard to say which FR graph my Paradox more closely resembles to my ears. Tyll's graphs show a nice, smooth roll-off past 200-300Hz. When I ran some sine sweeps on my Paradox, they sounded fairly flat. However, roll offs like that are really hard to hear with sine sweeps. I also don't remember hearing such a pronounced dip at 5KHz and a sharp treble spike after. Could be wrong...might have to check that again. Dips might not be obvious while listening to music, but they certainly are with sine sweeps.

Oh well. They sound great either way!

Tyll uses a calibrated test-head which has simulated "ears".  Purrin's setup doesn't have this.  The ear-phone interface has a big impact in the measured response, as does the material of the head/baffle.

I think Tyll said this earlier, but the bottom line is when you look at measurements of a phone, you can only compare those results to other phones measured on the same system.

I was bummed, I had a personal issue come up and couldn't send Tyll my phones in time for the cutoff.  I'll send him a set later just to get on the same measurement setup as so many other phones....

Congrats to Dogwan.  I tried various sponges, too, and couldn't get it to work at all.  He obviously shops at "magicsponges.com"...

They don't look that similar. One has a much smoother response. Looking at these graphs (I know how Tyll's measurements would translate into mine and how these would actually sound.) I would have to say that Dogwan's has mid-bass hump, slight midrange bump (better than stock), and a slight suckout in the upper mids, which are a little bit uneven. The devil is in the details.

I wasn't saying your headphones were bass heavy....I was saying that when I tried sponge, all I got was fun bloat.

I also tried various types...porous...not so porous...natural...synthetic...thin...thick...multiple layers...etc. I have tried more variations than the total amount of mods posted on this thread and nothing gave me that neutral sound except my current mod. Kudos to you for finding a sponge that worked!

Oh, I didn't mean it to sound that way. I knew what you meant, I was just posting on the fly and didn't phrase my reply correctly.

That sounds about right.

I am now torn about whether stay where I've been satisfied, or start fiddling again. If I can get another pair at $74 I may just have to start from scratch so I can keep my current pair as is.

Just did this headband mod today and it's just great. Very comfortable and look like it was made for it. :)

What headband mod do you guys prefer to use, and why?

I trimmed down the stock rubber headband on both sides with razor knife, then snapped on the padding from a DT 990 Pro, super comfy.

Cool! I am glad you like it. Did you trim down the stock band or just snap it over it?

that is very smart thing to do. if your satisfied with your current pair then by all means can just leave it ''as is'' and continue to enjoy them. the second pair can be another experiment and can shoot for different sound or try newer and crazier things that you thought couldn't be possible. just have to remember, imagination is endless :)

What exactly is your current mod and do you use your t50rps for mastering and mixing in your studio.

Thanks.

I modify the driver and housing, use different pads and apply a suspension headband to make them comfortable.

Yes...I do use them for mixing/mastering/restoration work.

Finally replaced the single-entry cable with a dual-entry one. (I hated the wiring inside the cups and the TRS jack. They made getting symmetrical mods difficult.) Materials: Canare mini-quad microphone cable, Amphenol TRS plug, paracord sleeving, heat shrink and the barrel of a pen for the tube at the Y split.)

How do you like the Amphenol plug?  I've always liked their looks a bit better than the comparable Neutrik, but always forget to order them when the time comes around...
