Just listened to some Fostex T50RPs today... WOW!

I placed an order for a t50rp at performanceaudio.com and got an email reply saying it is backordered

Order cancelled.

for those who cannot wait & don't want to pay the msrp, the T40rpMkII is available and should make an acceptable alternative. Hopefully someone who has modded both current t40 and t50 can chime in and report back.

Eagerly waiting to hear someone report about the other models as well.

LFF could you give us a description of your mods as you hinted that you have done something different.

I will happily do so, with pictures, once I get some feedback and maybe some measurements....

Just some CSD plots: http://www.head-fi.org/t/566929/headphone-csd-waterfall-plots/45#post_7728191

I'll be taking measurements for two people making mods on them. I'll also be making other data visualization tools to better see what's going on with the mods. In general, I'm keeping to waterfall plots in the time domain for damping type mods. If anyone wants the FR, I'll post those too.

Measurements are relative to each other (or my own as long as I used the same method.) So don't compare these with other peoples' FR graphs.

Blue - L channel - minor tweaks*
Purple -  R channel - minor tweaks*
Green - L channel stock
Red - R channel stock

*I don't know what he did inside, but the covering over the driver is removed - probably accounts for the extra treble peak. Again hard to say because I never measured Anaxilus' originals. Good thing I measured yours while they were stock. See 4 posts below for what was done.

Thanks for the charts!

I met with a few other head-fi'ers today (all years of experience and all with high end ortho, electrostat, IEM and dynamic headphone experience) and they were the first to audition my modded T50RP's. I won't go into details, but the impressions were extremely positive.

If you move those modded plots down a little, all I see is bigger adverse dips.  Square wave, impulse response, and THD changes would be interesting.  The impulse response stock is awful and the THD is all over the place.  Smeggy has shown that it's definitely possible to improve all of these.

Well, the waterfall plots are a large-scale impulse response, I guess.

I just clarified with Anaxilus what he did. They weren't intended as "mods" as he intends to remove the drivers. He was curious on the effect of the following tweaks:

  • Felt removed from front of driver
  • K271 paddeds added
  • Foam from vent removed.
