I wouldn't bother with the custom unit.  Its not clear to me that it sounds any better than the standard unit.

I have ordered a fully modded hiface - I would love to hear some more about how the two compare (ie stock/fully modded)
If you hear no clear improvements between the 2, I may consider changing my order - although this does not make sense to me as I have read and heard many fantastic reviews of John Kennys modified hiface.

Where did you buy or hear the fully modded unit??

@Tidus & anyone else interested. Here is the full review of stock/modded hiface plus details to order.

The USB input wasn't in the original specs, but Jerry has assured us since CanJam that 16/44 mini-USB input will be in the final version.

Toslink to coaxial? You'd need some type of serious converter. No you can't turn optical (light) into electric current without some type of serious, powered device.

It seems that its assumed that the ipod<solo will be the best thing to feed to jh-3a but won't something like the soon to be released colorfly sound better? With the colorfly you will be able to connect directly to the jh-3a via its digital out.  I am new at this but if the hm-801 sounds better when you use the headphone jack vs mini out to amp then wouldn't the same slight signal loss happen to the ipod<solo rig.

EG.  ipod<cable<solo<cable<jh-3a  vs colorfly<cable<jh-3a.  I know it's all digital but it seems the sound would be better from less transfer.  Are my assumptions wrong?

That seems to be the biggest problem.  I don't think I will be using my MBP mini digital outputs.  I am pretty sure I am sticking with the HiFace for now (its exactly how I feed the HM-801, the JH-3A will be no different).

Not sure if I saw this, but does the JH3a supply coax cables that will connect the unit or any other sort of connecting cables?

I doubt they would include cables for $2K.  That's just asking waaaay too much.

I am sure most of you know this, but for $171 on Ebay you can get a QLS QA350. It has a headphone out with a strong amp, an analog line out, an optical digital out and a coaxial digital out. Forgive me if this was discussed earlier, I didn't read the whole thread.

Let me get this right, for $171 I can play WAV files.  I mean, seriously, it plays only WAV files.  That is dumb if that's true.

I guess it's dumb.  My QA350 skulks away shamed......

Honestly, used as a transport under the right circumstances and a nice SD card library it's not a problem.  Could even be an advantage?  Nevermind, not going there.

WAV is uncompressed CD quality. It is the best, if you rip with exact audio copy. Nothing beats it short of hi-res (24/96 or higher).

FLAC is the same (bit-for-bit identical to WAV) and you get tags and shorter sizes.

Finally, this device basically has you abandon any investment you have in other codecs such as mp3.

Technically now you can buy 24/96 files which are the "mother tape".  Hence red book CD quality is no longer the best
