Nope, unfortunately I think the MPB only does analogue out and optical spidf out...not coax.  I wish it would though as it would make my life easier...but that is why there is a whole market for usb-coax converters out there

Yeah, I picked one of these up to solve two problems, one of which was the MacBook to JH3A connection (toslink to coax).

Not very portable?

True. At least some of us probably didn't ever think of the 3A system (added bulk, lowish battery life and coax/usb feed) as a truely portable improvement over the base JH13/16, but that's been covered earlier in this thread. If I'm carrying around a laptop I'm likely carrying around a ps for it and a bag to carry both. This box doesn't add much. Still a TOSLINK connection sure would have been nice.

I agree with you.  The 3A system is not portable for me either.  However, why not a USB->coax converter?

Well no doubt a USB-coax converter would work better for many situations. Like I said when I first mentioned it, I had a couple problems to solve. So besides toslink to coax conversion (for multiple devices), I also wanted to output to multiple DACs (1 optical, 1 coax output). Then it was also cheaper than the USB solutions I was seriously considering. If my situation was different - had a laptop without toslink or needed a tablet output (course 3As USB is covered for 16 bit - who knows what the iPad or Android will support) I'd go with a different option.

Guys, the best usb to coax converter (thats small and reasonably priced) is the new M2tech Hiface. Its made by some guys in Italy and it basically turns any computer (not a good transport with all moving and noisy parts) into an excellent transport.
It is fully asynchronous (like the jh-3a and gr8 solo) and can be modded/uprgraded with bigger oscillators and/or separate power supply. ie hiface not powered by the noisy usb 5v but by a separate battery pack.
Anyway, the real kicker is it is the first usb convertor to do FULL hi-rez 24/192 from the usb port. So if you have a laptop/ netbook or even home computer, you can listen to full hi-rez out of the usb port. Also, as a convertor it goes from usb to coaxial (or bnc if you prefer) so you connect you jh-3a with the coax port which is the best quality and also supports full hi rez 24/192.
For $150usd they are said to be an absolute bargin because not only does it facilite options not possible before, but also improves sound quality considerably. I have a fully modded one on order. (comes in a small box so it can house the batteries to power the unit).
This one is the standard unit - no separate power supply etc.
Hope this helps.

Also, JH-3a aside, if you use a computer at home as a transport and it does not have coax, the hiface will provide a much cleaner/ hi-end signal for any desktop DAC you wish to use.
So it can serve multiple purposes as you wont have to use any sub-standard usb unputs on DAC's any more.

AWESOME bang for the buck IMO!

I think i wll go with Ipod nano 5g, lod and JH-3a..and in home digitally. So which player will be better, Ipod Nano 5g or S:Flo2???

S:Flo2 has a better line out than the nano 5g IMHO. Go the s:flo2 if the larger size is not an issue. I think a small DAP (like nano or touch etc) using line out to the 3a is a great option for on the go, then usb or coax (digital) at home. It seems to be a good compromise. ( and ALOT cheaper than some portable digital options!)
