i did not realize that each IEM had a different crossover.  does this mean when people buy used JH13/16's and have them reshelled, they are getting an inferior product, since they are not retuned to match the new buyer's molds?  i dunno, this doesnt sound right

edit: there is very little going on with the internal crossover, surely not enough to suggest that each earpiece is individually tuned... I do not see why you couldnt put these small beads into an adapter

I think you might be surprised, I suppose they could be also doing it with the filters instead of the values of the SMD caps and R's used in the XO, but they ARE tuned for each person, depending on how deep the impressions go, how much air  there is left at the end and what shape the cavity is there will be a different FR

4-6 wires plus some C and R's in a tiny adapter?? good luck

just in time for back-up

jerry says this on his facebook page describing the modification.
Quote:
Once the physical changes are made the earpiece must itself be tuned, then it must be tuned with the amp, digitally.

wow, so this also means that the amp has no used value either, puts it off the radar for me, at least not till I hear one, which I cant unless a universal demo is made and makes its way to oz.

Not necessarily. The question is whether JH Audio will accomodate tuning new IEMs to old amps.

I think there is some misunderstanding about the 'tuning' on normal IEM. To compensate for the time delay (phase shift) cause by passive crossover, IEM maker needs to customize the length of the various sound tubes in each IEM in order to get the best coherence (the patent is hold by UE, and you can guess who is the listed inventor: Jerry). For people with special request (generally those with hearing damage), different filter can also be used to bump / reduce a certain freq. range. Then both side of the IEM will be measured and matched before sealing into the mold permanently. In remolding service, the remold-er often take before / after measurements to make sure the frequency response stays the same (they also adjust sound tube length and usually use the old filter back). This is what is meant by 'tuned for each person'.

Now to do it in a DSP, which can be digitally adjusted to have near perfect phase in all three channels, obviously the length of the sound tube become less relevant. In fact, the difference in the original sound tube length will induce phase shift in such setup, and thus must be readjusted to get back the right coherence. Now you can see the problem with using the new IEM with an external passive crossover (of third party origin, presumably) - since you can't adjust the length in the IEM anymore, you must find a way to have a close to perfectly synced, DSP-like passive crossover in order to get the right phase shift and coherence. It is not impossible, just not very probable.

Well, I for one am quite intrigued by this.  If this could plug into a Macbook via optical out at 24/96, with such a fine tuned FR and phase alignment and a tri-amped driver set I think I'd be in heaven.

Unfortunately 24/192 S/PDIF usually means coax and Macbooks don't do that, they do 24/96 optical. However, there are a few hi-res "USB to coax" adapters out there, with more being introduced as time goes by.  I still might be a candidate for sending in my JH13Pro to be modded for this sometime.  (well, it might make more sense to do it as a new JH-16 instead of modding my JH13)

@Facebook explanation: Looks as if the modding process requires eventuelly more effort than building a completely new one, doesn't is? That puts the high mod price into perspective...

Someone stated regarding the JH13 special deal last moth to show how Jerry Harvey knows to run a business. Well that JH-3A invention does this, too, in a way. Until there'll be a smaller JH-3A many or at least some will be tempted to get a combo for at home and get additional iems for being portable. At least the ones who can afford it.
Wouldn't it be great to have a JH13+JH-3A and an extra JH16? I would be very very tempted if there was a special deal like: "Buy a JH-3A combo and get another JH for free!" How about that??? :-)

I personally think the JH-3A to be semiportable. Of course you can't go running with it, but who would want to. I would never wanted to be sealed off my sourroundings when moving around outside. I don't even like listening to music with simple ear buds when biking. I need the acoustic feedback from the ground in order to know exactely what's going on around me.
So I'm very tempted by the combo as I can only think of situations where I would have my backpack on me anyway or where I just would carry the player+JH-3A from one location to another and sit or lie there anyway.

But being tied down to the iem+amp combo "forever" still gives me some thinking. So, I maybe think about it some more as the order would only be shipped out late summer according to their shop.

And expecting to get stoned I asked it anyway: Am I right when assuming that my iriver's optical out (also has optical in :-)) finally gets to show his true value through a JH-3A-JH13/6 combo?

To add to the last few posts skepticism, I am not a big fan of proprietary hardware in which I am locked in for the long term.

Some would argue that it makes for a marriage made in heaven when both are so finely tuned to one another, but as I recently read in a posting, the industry is changing so fast that I would miss out on the opportunity on other companies products after having dropped a bundle of cash.

I will wait it out.

But many will pull the trigger because it is the newest on gadget on the block and they are rich. More power to em.

What's the difference between this and Custom IEMs? This is just a larger package and slightly more expensive.

Interesting. It is speculation on my part but I am thinking that the JH13 may prove to be the best match with the JH-3A. It seems to be the more balanced in presentation. From there stir in extra bass according to song and taste.

Then again, if one is a trance hound and want to add 16 db of bass, the JH16 with the extra headroom might make sense. I am not...

Would it be possible to integrate a passive crossover in a cable? I mean if you can make add a remote sized remote on a headphone cable it should be possible to make a crossover too.

The best thing from a customer pov would be to for jerry harvey sell the 3A + JH13/16 (without passive crossover) + cable with passive crossover. That way the customer could use the active crossover + amp at home and still be free to use the Jh13/16 on the move with a smaller amp or directly out of the DAP.

The problem is I'm not really sure how commercially feasible that is for JH eve if they sell the cable + passive crossover as an option.
