If you still love Etymotic ER4, this is the thread for you...

my ER4SR finally arrived, after a brief session of listening (20-30mins), i can understand why this Tyll put this up on InnerFidelity's wall of fame

the treble extension is exactly what i have been looking for but unfortunately the low end does not pack a punch like some of my other IEM's that i'm used to

really loving it so far (hard to drive tho) :)

What's the cheapest replacement option for a frayed ER4P/S cable?

Etymotic charges $50 + $9 shipping

Cheapest one I see on ebay is $48

Alternative option is to buy the MMCX rehousing or adapter for $10 and a cheap MMCX cable for $10. Could I just use the P to S cable and use it at 73Ohms?

This one seems reliable. 11.11 price (their "black friday") will go down to $39

It's up to you to decide between the P (22 Ohm) or S (100 Ohm). There are cheaper ones out there but they mostly don't have resistors built-in so they definitely will sound worse. Also, @ClieOS has some custom sturdy stuff, I'd PM him to get more info about it.

the first time I changed the cable on a ER4S, I had to use pliers, so in my case I would certainly say yes. later is was indeed easier(still really stiff)
now I feel I have to mention this just incase: for those with the SR/XR, if you have to force, you're doing it wrong, so don't!

Plier sounds a little extreme :astonished::grin:

I basically slowly forced my nail (*a metal guitar pick from smartphone repair kit will also work wonder here) inbetween the gap of the driver and connector to pry them apart.

Pair it with a DAP that has a warm sound signature (ex: N5ii) or use a filter that has a slow decay and you'll find the low end improves :)

My ER4SR sounds great with my Cayin N5ii which gives it a hint a warmth in the low end and also my 300R which makes it more dynamic with the SLOW filter.

The sub-bass will never really be there though =P

Etymotic sells replacements cables for er4p and er4s? Or just later models? Do we still have to send them in and wait like 6 weeks? That’s why I never got replacements from them and bought custom cables.

Edit:

Looks like they don’t. I only see replacement cables for the newer models. At this stage in the game, that is ridiculous. Come on guys. I’d pay $50-60 for a replacement er4s cable. The secret’s out, Etymotic. Everyone knows how to replace the cable without doing any damage.

Looks like some great options!
Not nearly as cheap as the MMCX cables, but there is the added resistor to contribute to the cost.

To those who don't know about hf5 and er4, they use the "same" driver but by two different manufacturers. sonion 2389 is essentially knowles (2)9689. Slightly different in the fr. Thus to me. hf5 + PtoS adaptor ~ er4s.
Same thing may apply to er3. Etymotic being a "big" company means that they are able to customize ba driver. New er4's have customized drivers that you are not able to buy retail like you do with 29689/2389. So it's "safe" to etymotic.
Which also means that even if you crack er3/4 open, you won't find anything meaningful.
My word is, if you love etymotic and want to support etymotic, go buy er4sr + xr + mk5 and probably er1 and 2 lol.
If you want to have the most of your money and have the most of your er3, try adding 20-100ohm resistor to er3 and profit.

So if I were to add a 20 ohm impedance adapter to my ER3SE's like https://penonaudio.com/3.5mm-impedance-adapter.html <~~~ this one, would it give a more similar signature to the ER4SR? And would this work if I did a setup like this:

iPhone (source) > apple lightning dongle > Penon impedance adapter > ER3SE's? Need the dongle cuz, you know, Apple loves wireless.

Yes of course. And not just add 20 ohm, add 50 or more it will sound better.

i'm using the first gen Fiio X3 as a dac/amp w my laptop. not sure if it's a warm dap tho..
