My current headphones / IEM are:

-AKG K701
-Etymotic ER-4P

With this being said, I very much appreciate the detailed / balanced sound of these two products. While many people feel the bass may be light, the presentation works for me, especially when listening to bands such as The Grateful Dead.

With curiosity always looming, I want to get recommendations to other headphones (manufacturers) which yield a similar sound as the AKG K701's. That detailed, balanced sound.

Thanks!!!

most people say the hd600 is the closet sounding headphone to the akg701 not in the akg line.

Beyer DT880. They have good soundstage but not as wide as the 701's. Both are bass challenged.

Ultrasone 2500 or 750 reminds me of AKG but with bass.

If you have a Guitar Center near, visit and do some listening as they carry all these lines. I agree with the above on the sound differences listed of the three mentioned. The senns. do have a musical feel that are different from the analytical sound of the other two. I thought the ultrasones came closest with the addition of impact bass.

I have to disagree. The 880s are MUCH brighter and don't have the huge headstage the 701s have. 501's with a little bass EQ come very close.

What he said.

HD600 might be a bit too-bassy for you if you enjoy er4s/701s so much. I would recommend k501s as well -- bigger soundstage, less bass. Which amp are you using? A lot of this depends on synergy...

You should also think about Stax - they are quite detailed and have a very balanced sound. The SR-303/SR-404 with ss amp will probably serve you well.

I own both 701 and 2500 and respectfully disagree. I find the sound signatures of these headphones very, very different aside from better bass in the 2500.

Those are the two I started out with and still have. Now I have two K1000's and modded Baby O coming in, just to enlighten you on your future you don't realize yet

The only other phone I still want and don't have is HP1000, which I owned once. It would be a nice Grado counterpoint, except I don't feel that strong enough to pay the current prices.

What amp do you have? Because there are some that could give the k701 plenty of bass (Darkvoice 332 comes to mind).
Proline 2500 that just got onto my head sounds like a worthy contender also, although much stronger bass, and as stated constantly...S-Logic is a bit confusing (why is music in my frontal lobes?).
Otherwise - ... Stax Stax Stax, nothing beats Stax on detail and neutrality.

Oh, and GS-1000, but you need an ultra-warm amp if you don't want to get a sibilant monster.
