I love AKG K701...What other headphones offer a similar sound / presentation?

bump on this thread...

I, too enjoyed the K701 when I had it but the headband was an absolute deal-breaker for me.

So are the DT880's ('05) acceptably close in sonic signature to the K701?

I think my Audio Technica W1000 comes really close to the K701 sound. There's more similarities than differences imo, so Ill list the differences. The ATH have more up front mids than the K701. The bass response is better with the Audio Techs. More impact and better reproduction. K701 have better detail retrieval in highs and slightly larger soundstage.

Even though W1000 is closed, the soundstage is remarkably similar to the K701. The vocals are far more intimate and realistic on the W1000. Both headphones have similar high-mids and highs coloration.

I sold off my K701s after listening to the W1000s for a few days. At first the mids were a shock to me, but I realized just how much more I appreciated the music when vocals have weight.

A 3 year bump deserves an answer.  Yes.  The beyer has a lot of similarities with the white AKG.  The DT880 has a bit more bass impact, similar (maybe slightly not as good) mids and treble extension is similar.  They have different soundstage but close to each other (K701 is bigger I think), overall the beyer is slightly warmer and maybe a better all rounder (IMO), but there isn't a lot in it, and obviously individual preference and gear will influence each listener. There really isn't a lot of difference, they are different flavours but marginally and if you love K701 but find the headband a deal breaker then I think you would be happy with DT880 (250 ohm) everyone seems to find them exceptionally comfortable.  Having said that, the AKG now has 8 bumps on the headband and it might be more comfortable for you.

The HD-800 comes close to the K702 sound, but not as natural as the AKG's. The 800's have a boost on the bass and the highs can get annoying with high end solid state amps. A very good option to the 70X will be the Stax 4070, or the JH-13.
