Their presence itself is a valuable deterrent, and they are also fully allowed to do consent searches and customer stops and interrogations as long as they don't block an exit. They can also act as a valuable witness in a criminal case against any shoplifters if required. And that's just for store employees working as security guards; more and more big-ticket stores are using actual police officers which, obviously, have the same power as any other police officer.
No reason to roll your eyes, it's all pretty simple, logical stuff. No store security employee undergoes anywhere near the same amount of training as an actual police officer, so they obviously don't legally deserve anywhere near the same amount of responsibility or power.
So the point of actual security guards is to present a facade of force to discourage casual shoplifters? God forbid they actually be allowed to provide security...
@Soundstige, what you said makes enough sense, do you know how stores arrange to have a police officer on the premises? I'd imagine that there would be some kind of fee for that, and some kind of permit.
Honestly no, the limit of my knowledge doesn't go that far into the business of actually employing an officer. I would imagine a city permit and a hefty wage would be mandatory, but I can't be sure.

I owned a couple of retail outlets at malls. I had employees but much of the time I was there 13 hours a day week in and week out. The security officers ended up being my best friends. At malls there is really not much to do most of the time so we talked about different stuff all day long. I'm a lot older than most of these kids so they kind of looked up to me and asked me advice on stuff about life. Over the years we almost became like family.
Most security in malls can't touch you. They have to call the police if they want to detain someone. These guys were just normal people just trying to get threw life. They had to make sure that different rules were in play and the one amazing job was to stay on the roof all day looking for car theft! They would also comb the parking lot looking for car theft. The malls really didn't want to do much of anything. If a crazy person came on site they would not call the police but try to escort the people back to the street. They were good watch dogs at night so as to call the police if they were to see anything. Some were collage kids, some wanted to be police. Some went on to join the military and it was also a great experience for me. I also had another outlet at a ghetto mall. There were gang issues but again there was also a mini police station right on site to handle stuff if it ever went crazy.
I also had some bouncer friends in my life. To me I really don't go to bars but after hearing these guys stories I see stuff from a different angle. This guys loved the power they had one or two nights a week. The were just barely at one side of the law where the fun was breaking into altercations with the bar patrons. There was always the chance that they could meet 350lbs of nightmare which could change there lives for good but they didn't care. They said that you never see more than one or two people come to a bar no matter how big and bad they are, they always had them out numbered. They also stated that the folks causing trouble were drunk and easy targets. They bragged about the violence and frankly it was sick to hear about. They were people looking forward to a fight two nights a week when they went to work. Later the bar fired them for seeing what they were.
Some people just enjoy the power trip. I am 270lbs and have been going to the gym for 20 years. If some security officer wants to strip me I assure you only one of us will be walking out of that little room in the end. I don't care what country I'm in.
I'm not sure about various state DoC's but Federal we need at least a Bachelor's or 4 years of active military duty. Many have more education or are pursuing more to move up in the BoP or have a mix of education and military/law enforcement experience.
I recently saw statistics of the breakdown of staff but I cannot seem to locate it right now, it may have been an internal supplement that I couldn't post anyway.
I am lost for words, it truly is unfortunate when this perfect scenario you have set in your mind turns out to be a complete nightmare, such a time waster!
I am the opposite to you though, I am exceptionally paranoid when bringing anything into a store, even reaching for my phone in my pocket but that may be because of my anxiety issues, I stress over many little things, in public that is.
