HiFiMan HE4XX

how those compare to the HE500?

Poorly. Every 400 series HiFiMan is nowhere near the 500 (also only the HE-400i is tuned/voiced similarly), even though some of them are great in their own right.

Could someone please measure the weight of the HE4XX headphones with the original box and anything else included in it ? I need this for proper shipping selection. I asked the Massdrop support several days ago and I still didn't get an answer:pensive: :clock430:.

Has anyone taken the cloth mesh off the grills and then added that mesh to between the ear pads and the drivers? I did and it seemed to open up the earphones some. Basically more airy/better soundstage. And calmed the treble down nicely. Now I’m just going to wait to get Ori pads on the next drop.

3.102 lbs. I got this from DHL tracking data (international shipping). My package will be delivered in a few days (2 weeks retainment at customs clearance office, without any reason given). If it is not urgent, I could provide you the dimensions also when it is delivered. I will measure the weight too on delivery.

Bhargu: Yes, that would be great. I can wait. My package is 3.25 lb but that includes the extra box and wrapping. I only need to know the weight of the original headphone box with headphones and stuff included in it.

Maybe it's the other way round. They sent you 2 pairs instead of 1 by mistake :k701smile:.

Quick question for anyone that's been swapping pads on their 4XX - how have you secured the pads to the hifiman ring insert?
I got Brainwavz round XL hybrid pads, and I'm looking for ideas on securing the ring to the pad and/or both of them to the cup a little better. The problem is that the ring is smaller than the pad so it can move around a little. Also, the lip on the back side of the pads doesn't easily fit in beneath the pad/cup. It does work all together (and sounds great to me) but I feel like it could be a little tighter and more secure.

As far as sound, I still have more listening to do, but early impressions are good. I'm coming from mostly brainwavz angled pleather and a brief swap back to the stock pads.

4xx are fine headphones, given the price it's a B++/A-. The only shortcomings are:

* if you want crazy low bass, look elsewhere
* if you want heavy detail, elsewhere

For not that much more used HE-500's ($350-$450) crush them, also Sundara's, and the new cheaper 560's

But if you like the 4xx just enjoy them, they lull you into thinking they punch much higher. Great on massed strings, cello's, stand up bass, female vocals, piano, guitars.

The headband is nicer than the HE-500 too.
