**Hifiman HE-400 Impressions and Discussion Thread**

I kind of want to buy HE-400's in addition to my DT880 600ohm Premium's. The amp I'm using is a Little Dot MKII. I have heard that it will not drive orthos well. Would it be a waste to buy the 400's and use them with the Little Dot?

I don't know what that amp is capable of, but my Aune T1 might be up for sale soon. I find my Denon AVR-1613 works best for my needs and drives my HE-400's very well and super loud. Then I have a FiiO E9 as a backup that pushes a little harder too. The Aune did a good job...but I bought it in the thought I could replace my sound card and FiiO E9...and while it was good...it wasn't for me. But it drove the HE-400's very well too. The bassier tube I purchased with it made a nice little difference too..made a huge difference to my Denon AVR using the RCA's though!

Also I took the D2000 pads off a couple weeks ago and went back to stock pleathers...which are now nice and broke in. Very comfy...I prefer them...and I even have the spacers in and it's the way to go!

Just received my HE-400 about an hour ago. I also received velour pads... Is it worth it to put them on or try the stock pads for awhile? I also now see that the X3 sounds good but the HE-400 likes power. They sound really good with the X3 but I do have to give them a little extra volume.

Personaly I think the velour has smoother treble
Stock is just to sharp sounding for me

Is it related to the bass only or the total spectrum ??

The problem now is that you'll focus on that all the time

Contact Hifiman and get a replacement !!

Exactly! I'm already doing that unfortunately. I'm not sure if it is just the bass either, at first I thought that may be it as well but it will take some more listening to put my finger on it. I'm going to measure the impedence & go from there.

switch tubes also on pan am to check, and try

Yep, tried that as well!

Thank you for that, I actually read that before I received the headphones & already forgot. It's a shame that I may have to do that with a brand new item but things happen, I really like these so I'm not going to let something as simple as that ruin my experience.

Ask a friend to second check the he 400's

You can try opening up the phones but don't miss, or damage the headphones or you'll get the warranty unbalanced also :basshead:

you have akg phones, use them for the month it will take for the guarantee period

Hey all, I have a question too. I have the HE400 unamped, and to me it sounds great. what improvements would I really see with amping, likely with the Magni/Modi unless someone thinks I could do better in a similar price range

There is some improvement. Here are Mike from Headfonia's comments from his initial HE 400 impressions post:

Not to mention that it's very easy to drive. I can get good volume right from the Ipod's out at max volume (though lacking punch). With something very basic like a Fiio E17, I'm already getting all the amplification I need.

I would agree w/ him for the most part… I also have the E17 and it seems to be adequate for amping the HE400s. However, something meatier w/ its own power supply (like my Schiit stack of Bifrost+Vali) should add some weight or power that the E17 just can't.

Furthermore, here are Lieven of Heafonia's comments re: amping:

Amping the He-400 with the Violectric made it too bright/forward sounding for my taste. On tubes it is a lot smoother, lush sounding and laid back, but no way near the HD650 laid back. Tubes for me is the way to go with these headphones. I was absolutely surprised about the changing character of the HE-400 when using a different amplifier.

Adding to this, I have only listened to my 400's w/ 2 amp's - the E17 & Vali. I much prefer the Vali which is a tube amp, and I think I have seen a lot of people recommend it to go w/ the HE 400, so you may want to consider it instead of Magni, UNLESS a smoother sound isn't what you're looking for.
