Got an ifi micro dsd black label yesterday, hopefully get to give the he4 a run with it this weekend. Using is a dac/amp, or dac to sx1010, or dac/preamp to sx1010. This thing kicks some serious ass so far.

Let us know what you think about the soundstage with the headphone jack, or DAC-to-SX1010, and DAC/pre-amp-to-SX1010.

Where is all the he4 love that once existed? Where has everyone run off to? Maybe upgraded to the he1000? It's so quiet in here these days.

When the he500 came out, the he4 was already being pushed as yesteryear stuff. It wasn't tuned that well out of the gates either, so much potential underneath that star cloth and stock grills. Lightweight too.. It was ahead of its time.

Hifiman took the he4 ideas and made the he560... Naming it after the more successful model gave it a following.

I'm still kicking myself for buying a pair of he400 (originals) instead of these when headamp had them both on sale for the same price a few years back.

Is the he560 really comparable to these?

Some at the local meets preferred the he4 over the he560. Of course the he4 was modified and he560 stock at the time but yea

Thus ifi is a damn good device, drives the he4, just not as well as the sx1010! But, this thing is a truly brilliant piece of audio gear. It is incredible sounding, I really can't believe how good it is.

I only had maybe 20 minutes with that setup last night and I was pretty tired. Definitely a big step up from the x3 being used as the dac. What I'm really looking forward to trying is using the ifi as a preamp and dac, removing the jumper from the 1010s preamp section, and seeing how that sounds. I am absolutely in love with the ifi though, it is an incredible device, I couldn't have made a better audio purchase decision for 400 bucks.

If you want the sound of the HE-4 in a well-isolated in-ear, look at the Aurisonics ASG-1Plus. They are discontinued now, but you can still find them used. Here is one thread, though you will have to ask him about it in a seperate PM:
