HE-500, LCD2, D5000, DT770, SR80, on a speaker amp (Emotiva mini-X A-100) Project

I am using stock cable and find it just fine.  Though, it's fair to clearly state that I am not a cable believer.  Later on, when I have a chance to try out other cables, my belief might change.  The treble stays the same IME within the last couple years.  Before that, I am not sure.  Before i bought mine, I use a friend's HD800 for about 2, 3 weeks.  His is a little older.  When I got mine, I thought mine was not as bright as his.  Sonido thought the same thing about his HD800.  Then, I got the friend's HD800 back to compare directly.  The 2 were identical.  :)
Bias affects your hearing so much just like other placebo effects.  I personally find that between HE500 and HD800, my preferences are fully covered for all music genres to which I listen.
I am a happy man as far as HPs

Glad to hear. I was totally not planning to buy headphones anytime soon (even though I have been glued to the HE-560 threads). After getting my main monitors, I was planning to save up for smaller desktop monitors. The HD800 is really, really making it hard. BTW this was in loud meet conditions, so I wonder how it will sound in a quiet room. Probably gonna pick up a used down the road. Not shelling out $1600 for retail (unless Colorware). I remember seeing used ones go for $1000 a year ago. Is is still around that much?

This has the potential to actually be end game HPs for me. I never felt that with either of the 3 planars.

^ set your price to buy it.  I did.  I was not willing to pay more than $1100.  I got lucky with a %99.9 new one!  There are a few like new HD800 popping up here and there for around $1000 lately too.  I know what u mean about monitors.  Near field monitors still rock.  HPs are super convenient late at nite though.

I got lucky in India last month buying a brand new 800 from a dealer at ~ $ 950. He had a sale going on

Just want to chime in about my recent finding. The mini-X a-100 also makes the old legacy AKG K340s sing. I've recently acquired this set up and got that 'wow' right away.
The 340s used to be amped by my Audio-gd 10SE, which has enough power to drive them easily. But the Emotiva just brings it to a higher level. I guess that makes sense since these 'phones were probably designed with speaker amps in mind.

So I've been wanting to do it for a while and finally did :) Here is my new Mini-X!!!

I had to move the silver faceplates 1/4 inch outwards as the large plugs did not fit but it doesnt change the look at all :)

So did anyone try the Topping T60 with the He-500's? I can't decide on the A-100s or the T60

There was some discussion about that a few pages back (or maybe another thread). The owner of the TP60 was generally happy with it, and noted it had a lower noisefloor than the Emotiva.

I recently got the Topping T60 and the noisefloor is very audible. I can hear it when I am watching shows and listening to music on low volume. Not sure what I did wrong but it's starting to annoy me but I'll get used to it in a few days. However, they have opened up a lot more compared to the E17 I was running it off of before.

My topping TP60 doesn't have any noise floor issues. My mini-x has a higher noise floor than my topping. Might be just your unit

It might be the cables also I'm not sure why but I heard hissing when i was using a crude speaker tap. When I went to a more professionally made one by BTG I stopped hearing it

So try a different speaker tap

Awesome! I was trying to track down a pair with this exact idea in mind! I can only imagine how much they open up with some serious amplification.

On a side note, as a Civil Engie, gotta love your location

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the TP60 does not have a common ground and the way you're connecting it merged the ground together. To make it work right I've recabled the HE500 so it terminates into a 4 pin XLR male, then connect that into my speaker taps which terminate into a 4 pin XLR female.

The cheapest way to do it right would be to cut the stock cable and just hook it up to the amp terminals

You can use that setup with the mini-x but not the topping. I did a similar thing to you with the topping and the circuit protection cut in so it doesn't even work at all for me. I'm surprised you get sound
