HE-500, LCD2, D5000, DT770, SR80, on a speaker amp (Emotiva mini-X A-100) Project

  Sick, thanks
So turning down the knob to zero is my routine from now on

Just reiterating, any damage to headphone would be very noticeable sonically right?

Just turn knob  down to zero before turning off the amp EVERY TIME. And yes, any damage would be heard right away. If you are not hearing anything thus far, you should be OK (fingers crossed0.

Anybody hear the LCD-3 through the Emotiva ? I am doing so with a strange combination of BTG speaker taps and Toxic Cables Silver Poison balanced cable. To me, the 3 was more neutral than the 2.2. With this set-up, it seems that there is greater detail and instrument separation with more a more pronounced and sweeter top end. Oh, the slam is there when needed alright. I am continually amazed with what the Emotiva can do. Incidentally, my DAC is the Schitt Gungnir.

Well, someone posted about it not long time ago.

Does anyone know how the La Figaro 339 pairs with the HE-500 compared to the Emotiva? Is the 339 even enough to power the HE-500? I realize that there very well may have been a comparison on this thread but I don't really have the patience to go through the 209 pages that is this thread.

Ask in the HE-500 appreciation thread. There have been a couple of people using the LF 339 who might have heard the Emotiva as well.

Here's a question for you guys. The Emotiva MiniX has a relatively low input impedance of only 10K ohms. They recommend at least a 10:1 ratio on power amp input impedance/preamp output impedance matching for adequate gain staging to reduce S/N. My Quickie preamp is 2K ohms output impedance and with an upgrade I may choose to do, it increases this to 4K ohms. Could I make an adapter box that I can put in between the Quickie and Emotiva so it would improve the impedance matching, without degrading sound quality? Is this even possible to do along the RCA line, or do I have to add resistors either inside the Emotiva or Quickie?

Thanks in advance.

I quote this to mention that I emailed Emotiva about the input impedance of this amp and they responded that it is 50 kohms.  Where did you hear that it was 10k?  I was interested in learning this because I'm running a Behringer DEQ2496 straight into the amp and I'm having to knock the gain of the EQ down by about 8 dB to get below 2V RMS signal from the DEQ (they have pretty high output voltages) and I was wanting to build a fixed attenuator so that I could keep the gain at 0 dB when I bypassed my PEQ settings in the 2496...

Well they told me 10k

You actually hit 11 o'clock with any HP on the Emotiva? Dude, your eardrums ouch !

You can, on the he4, on some recordings. Not that its good for me or anything. Sometimes i just want to rock out.
Usually though, i stick to around 9, then 10 to get the lower end moving.

^ on some DACs with lower output voltage such as the concero, having the Emotiva's volume at 11ish is quite normal.

Ya I'm still stuck with my usb dac destroyer, so on guessing that's the reason

Just finished putting my mini-X back together after adding the front TRS jack and the inline attenuation resistors. I ended up putting 110 ohm resistors in there but I wish now that I would have done at least the 220 ohm as the 110 ohm only gave me what feels like 15-20 degrees more volume knob play. Hopping back and forth between the speaker taps and the attenuated TRS jack sounds the same but not that much difference in volume knob position. Im thinking of going back in and putting the 220 ohm resistors in instead.

Use the right side of the graphic. 110 ohm resistors on the two + headphone wires will give you 12dB of attenuation which is about the minimum I'd recommend anyone start with, so 100 to 200 ohm 3 watt resistors is my recommendation. One resistor attenuation like this is usually fine for solid state amps but for any tube amp I'd recommend you go with the left side of the graphic's two resistor network to match the amp's expected speaker load.

Where did this chart and values come from? Im interested to see some dB values for attenuation only above 220 ohms.

Is not that hard to calculate..

Pick your desired impedance, add the headphone impedance unto that number.. Then divide by headphone impedance, and take the logarithm to that and multiply by 20.

Example:

Headphone impedance: 38 ohm
Resistor: 400 ohm

20*log((400+38)/38) = attenuation in dB
