Has the fake ath-m50 arrived?
Sep 4, 2012 at 7:14 PM Post #346 of 384
So now I'm worried.

I was GOING to buy the M50's from Dzone2 on ebay (they also have an online store - www.dzone2.com) but now I'm second guessing my decision.

I'm also impatiently waiting for the CKM500's I ordered from Dzone2. Audio Technica doesn't have them listed as an authorized seller... So I'm REALLY hoping they're not fakes and sound like garbage, especially after Dsnuts hyped them up enough for me to go and order them.

Has anybody bought from Dzone2 on ebay? Are they legit?

Hello,
I bought ATH M50 last week, I used Koss Porta Pro previously. Since I listen music from M50 I can say that I discovered new sounds on them. I really happy with it. While I'm searching around head-fi forums, I saw this post and I read from the begin to the end and finally I checked my ones yesterday.

 - I can say that sound and build quality is excellent. Plastics look like top quality
 - In the box, audio-technica web page is written correctly and Made in Taiwan
 - In the box it is written "1227" below the serial number and when I detached ear pad same number "1227" are stickered both pads
 - I detached the cabinet of the pads and I saw that board is not green, it is yellowish, and cable looks like firm and good quality
 - White pad inserted between pad and board
 - Logos are inserted correctly out side of the pads
 - ONE Thing make me suspicious is there is NO "125B" sticker inside the pads.

Actually last thing makes my mind confused. All clues says that it is genuine except last one.
I posted pics below.

What you think, is it genuine or not ?
I bought it from ebay, from "vv0ltz" who is 235 good transaction and %100 positive feedback. But he is not authorized seller I think.
I paid 137,5 USD + shipping.

Thanks for your comment.

I'm in the same boat as Makaan.

I purchased 2 pairs from Ebay.

ATH-M50 (Black, Coiled Cable) and ATH-M50s/LE (Silver 50th Anniversary Model, Straight Cable).

Both seem legit except for lack of "125B" sticker.

Also, mine didnt come with Registration Card (but seller is not authorized dealer) but the Limited Edition ones did come with the thankyou card/envelope.

I just read through half of this thread and wow. I wish I would have stumbled upon this before I purchased min from ebay last night. I am now stressing over this and I am indeed mind ****ed over this. Can someone tell me if these seem legit, or if anyone has had any experience with this seller please?

Sellers name is "chicagohottie"

I bought the ones in that link last night. It says they are new in box, but I don't see any mention of a warranty.
I'm also concerned about the way that box looks compared to the "TEAL" colored box. Can anyone clarify that both boxes are legit AT
boxes? Any way I bought them last night and already they are in transit in Wyoming, MI, so I should have them soon to review and look
for any suspicious signs of them being counterfeits.

139usd is an OK price for the m50, i doubt it is a fake.

blue/white AT box - old production
teal/white AT box - new production

I had a blue/white AT box for my m50 when i first bought it.

in case you are wondering about the sound, basically the m50 that has the teal/white box has somewhat a U-shaped sound while the m50 with the blue/white box has the real V-shaped sound sig.

you can return your m50 anyway if it is fake, or do a mod inside the cups to make it sound great. =)

my friend bought a fake one at ebay sometime last year and it doesn't have any box.

Thanks for the response Dyaems. That puts a rest to the color of the box situation. I wasn't aware that there were old and new productions and each had a certain box. Hopefully they are real. I messaged the seller my concerns about the authenticity of the phones, and he replied promptly. He said "No worries, these headphones are 100% authentic and there is nothing fake about them. They are not under warranty since I am not a dealer but they are certainly the real deal. Thanks for your business." Kinda puts me at ease, but I will still inspect them to be 100% sure.

I'm in the same boat as Makaan. Got a white pair. Everything looks legit except the lack of a 125B sticker inside the pads, the only thing left to do would be send them to Audio Technica for verification, which means I wont be able to open them on Christmas Day :frowning2:

I have a real m50 LE version and it has those small holes in the inner earcup flap.
So I assume if thats why you think they are fake then you are incorrect.
If older models do not have these holes then I can understand your worries.
Best telling factor is the sound.
Fakes cant sound as good.
Fakes probably have different color voice coils as well.
I haven't checked but assume the real driver coils would be blue ,
Where fakes are simple copper colored. .

i had the m50 before but i sold them  ( i regret that ) and i got these and these seem fake compared to the ones  i had.. they are lighter , the ear pads are cheaply made theres cheap foam inside the earpads   , the audio technica logo is grey and not white , the cable feels low quality

Hey people, I Bought a pair from Amazon.
Everything Checks out OK
Packaging
The stitching
The Sound Quality

Opened the Driver Casing
The Circuit Board was Gold and Grey as it should be
But...No Sticker
Should I be worried?

I have the same issue. No sticker either side. The logo on the headband is supposed to be silvery-grey correct?

Thanks!

If people were truly worried then they'd stop buying from eBay unless they are certain that the seller is authorized and has some cred on here. I got legit Shure E4g's ages ago dirt cheap, that was luck. After the fake IE8s (got my money back and the 8's came back in the mail literally a year later) I gave up on purchasing audio equipment from eBay. I might do cables or project sunrise amps but that's as far as I'll go. I haven't touched eBay in general since those fake IE8s. The seller was so addiment that he didn't know they were counterfeit but never claimed the return shipment. Seller had excellent feedback, even people saying they sounded good, maybe the feedback was fake as well... Just stay away guys, fakes give you that terrible heart sinking into your stomach feeling... Not cool
