It's really a pity because iPod, iPhone, and other MP3 players are skyrocketing in popularity, and you need headphones to get any real sound out of them

But, just like Beats, most people have them just for the looks and hardly use them beyond the basic features, Facebook, Words With Friends, and Draw Something.

True.

I see what kids really do with their Beats: they wear them around their necks like it's a fashion accessory. This makes me think people who purchase Beats care more about the image than the sound.

What are you talking about! Beats not only deliver quality sound, they give you all the great benefits of exercising without ever setting foot in the gym! Simply by wearing beats, you will naturally be able to take wider strides and work those inner thigh muscles you never use! Whenever people's glance sets on you, your new Beats will remind you to start rocking your head to the beats of the song, even if nothing is being played!

Um. *Ahem*
Just to say that seems to be what I notice with Beats users around. Little do they know that when I look at their headphones, while wearing my clearly inferior cans, I'm not jealous.
On a side note, no mixrs out in Canada yet (as far as I know)... and while the number of beats users had dropped previously, they've multiplied again. Wanted to go try it out :< Must see this fabled quality.

Speaking of fashion accessories, I wonder if people actually buy Beats for their wide variety of colors. I know many that bought Urbanears for that exact reason. If Senn pulls this kind of stunt also, wonder if people will jump to it.

I won't mind as I do have a dislike against apple's tactics, but at least their product isn't THAT bad.

I don't hate either company, they're just out to make money like everyone else (although I find Beats' marketing schemes annoying). Who I can't stand are the masses that purchase these products, rave about them, and then dismiss people like us who are "not wearing the Beats" as the ignorant ones.

You're right, I forgot the average consumer is to blame for the big companies rising, and to add that status symbol into the world wide headphone "culture" as japan does the same and other places. Not all of course, but still..and those reviews on the site are really...annoying, and then they claim to be the audiophiles while the people in this forum doesn't have to even post a sentence to get their opinions straightened out. That is a good reminder, but then again..I do hate their schemes at least.

yeah their products are good - but over-priced I find.
Just like bose and monster IMO

Indeed, hopefully something will be done with their prices in order to give everyone a good product to actually recommend.
I agree with at least bose, monster products I've heard good of except the beat products. The bose IE2 for example isn't bad, but for 100 dollars at a muffled spectrum is a NO-NO for me.

Similar to what been brought up multiple times in this thread, I don't see a problem with Beats being worn as a fashion statement. I only have an issue with it being done under the guise of being a high quality (for the cost) headphone. I'd even be fine with someone saying they bought them mostly for looks but also for sound. At least that would be admitting that the sound wasn't the main factor and that a different choice might have been made if sound had been the primary goal.

The problem I do have with Beats as a fashion statement is the lack of variation and unique designs. I don't mind popular products becoming a trend, but it's so much better when it's a trend that allows for individuality. The Beats Studios are about the closest thing to that, only because of the color choices. The Beats designs are simple and clean. I understand the purpose of design cohesion but the simple designs make each product too similar and loses that aspect of uniqueness, especially with the limited color options for most of their products. They simple design lacks depth and it loses its visual appeal quickly. To me, the fact that it would fall into the "accessories" area of fashion makes them especially boring. Like a nice tie with a suit, that's the place to make a nice statement and stand out a little. I'd rather see Beats cranking out similar designs in terms of audio performance with a more options for the aesthetic design.

I don't see a problem there either (except in my mind Beats make for quite an ugly bow tie).

There is a problem, however, when Beats owners call out others for wearing different headphones (main point of this thread). High fashion brings elitist egotism.

I beg to disagree. Everyone here is obsessed with trying to prove that their Beats are the best, without trying anything else.

Headphones are used for fashion purposes now? I feel like generation gap has occurred.

Oh well, this stuff happens. By 2015 all the cool kids will show off their Mattel hoverboards and ride around with their pockets turned out, it will be latest fashion craze.

Going completely off topic, I heard that Apple MP3 players actually have a horrible audio chip. Would music quality vary between different MP3 players? I heard that the Zune has an amazing audio chip, and I was wondering if it's worth purchasing just for that, but can you actually notice a change? Is that why the Cowon MP3 players are so popular on Head-Fi?

IK I'm getting off topic, but I'm still new-ish to HF audio and just want to get a little more enlightened, and I thought that creating a new thread every time I have a new question would be annoying.

Especially when it is just the same as sound quality. Why bother saying this is the best fashion statement you can get out of your life, when you may not have the same taste as the beats user? The sound quality of the beats aren't better than the rest, but sure are......different I guess? Even with that in mind, people may not like the beats SQ compared to say...sony xb500s, so high fashion indeed brings the elitists out of them.

I personally think Apple products are under-rated here. The iPod touch is a fine audio player. Also the 5th generation Ipod classic is apparently a fantastic high volume(size) player but I've never heard it.  The apple earbuds are actually decent for earbuds (IEMs blow them away of course).

-edit, speaking of basic audio of course not PCs.
