Quick question should I go for Burson Fun amp into my Sound Blaster AE-5 or sell that off to a buddy of mine and go for Burson Play for my fostex T60RP. My uses are competitive gaming and any form of heavy rock metal ect....
Currently I only have the baffle mod on my T60RP will upgrade pads eventually.
That is a bit of a tough call. If the AE-5 has a line out mode, it could be worth keeping on as a DAC especially if you wanted to use the creative DSPs. If it doesnt have a line out mode, you will be doubling amping your headphones which is not ideal.
The Fun is a better amp (more power and dual-mono design) than the Play but I am not sure how noticeable the difference will be as the design is pretty similar. Play still has plenty of power for the t60rp.
The Play uses 3 more dual op amps for the DAC section which means the effect of OP amps is stronger. If you want to do a lot of op amp rolling the Play is better.
I had some issues with the Play having a USB ground loop which was giving some noise which is why I ended up returning it and getting the Fun with the Topping D50. Some others had that issue too but others were fine, so it may not be an issue for you.
If you are looking to save some money you might even try just the basic version of the Play, at $299 its really quite an amazing value. Never got a chance to try it with the T60RP but even the basic version was very good with my 650, better than the Magni/Modi Multibit I tested it against. I do think the Vivid op amps are an improvement, especially for games as the improved soundstaging and dynamics was very useful there.
Burson lets you return things within 30 days, you just have to pay return shipping and 5% restocking fee, so you could always get the Basic Play or Fun and then buy the Op amps to test them out and see if you like the sound.
If you do buy the Fun you should actually buy the OP amps separately anyway because its slightly cheaper than buying them pre-installed as long as you are comfortable doing it yourself ( it is very easy to do).
