Has anyone compared the various mods?We have Thunderpants, Faust's, dBel84's, Sachu's, Botbytes, Dogears, Mrspeakers, LFF, fishski13...  Wondering if i should bother with making cups and making pads, leaving stock cups and buying pads, leaving stock and making pads, different dampening schemes, etc.

I just got my pair in yesterday, and have been burning them in to get a feel for them before I start modding.  I plan on dampening the cup (not sure what clay to use, or maybe blutak), and putting transpore over the felt on the back of the driver (over the four corners of the white felt, like sachu did).  Then either buying 880 pads or making bot's pleather pads...  I'm in socal so if anyone wants to do a lil swapsie I'm down.

^ Yeah, start now, and you can send it in if you goof.

I'm getting a second pair that I will leave completely stock, to compare between the two and because I love these headphones so much.

Wow! Most excellent!  I was just going to start a thread asking for this exact information as I want to start modding my T50RPs and documenting the changes with measurements along the way.  This reference is going to help a LOT!

Thanks!

I guess the question people are gonna want to know is, which mod will Tyll choose?  Or are you gonna do all of them?

I prefer choosing the mods by myself, instead of someone telling what should I do or should I like.

Oh I wasn't implying as much.  But I was curious and I think others would be as well.  This is based just on the buzz that these headphones have received with respect to both their moddability and Tyll's interest and measurements of the resultant sound.  I wasn't at all trying to say that you or anyone else would simply follow.

But who knows, maybe some people will just follow.  I do get the feeling that new T50RP owners are searching these threads for a recipe instead of exploring the process of damping, seal, etc.

Gonna try as many as I can.  And when I'm all done, I'm gonna rip it apart and build the Smeggy Thunderpants "kit" I got from him. (Or maybe I'll just buy a second pair for that.) At any rate, gonna see if I can map out What is going on with each mod.

Open to suggestions on the order of modding though. That's got me a bit stumped.

It seems like mass loading the baffle, and acoustic foam on the cup are the base mods to get rid of unwanted resonance. The other mods (material damping front of driver, material damping back of driver, covering/uncovering bass ports) seem to be fine tuning it to your taste. I'm starting this project for the first time as well, so unfortunately i don't know more than that at this point.

I'm convinced the pads have a huge effect. What's the skinny there? What firts?

Hmm, I think it'd be really awesome if all of this information (what to do first, what each mod does, etc) were to be consolidated in one place.  I was really wanting to mod a pair of these, but...well, I honestly don't know where to start either.

Still not sure about the best place to get them in Canada though...but I guess $10-$20 shipping + about $20 taxes isn't all that bad...but I'd rather avoid large shipping costs if at all possible.

From my reading so far people have used mostly the SRH840 pads or the O2 pads although the O2 pads are quite a bit more than I'd like to pay for pads. There's also a tutorial somewhere on how to make your own pads and that may be something to look into.

Here's my Stupendous T50RPs on my stupendous headphone stand - once called a banana stand

Piece of leather 'strap' placed around the sandwiched pads to make it more stupendously appealing
