Focal Utopia General Discussion

The Hugo 2 might also be interesting. But I haven't heard the Hugo 2 yet so I can't comment on it. But I suspect it should be really good.
Or maybe the Hugo TT. I might be able to audition that. But really I think I want a Dave, but I can't audition it. Then I say to myself, what's holding me back, I'll get a Dave and I won't love it? It's possible, but not likely.

There's hundreds who love DAVE and I've come across 4 forum members on various sites who rejected it without any difficulty. I'm sure there's more to be found. If you can afford it but don't spend a few hours with it before buying something else, well that's just very bad luck.

Hugo 2 is going to be hard to audition for at least another month, I'd guess, but I'd suggest it's worth waiting for it. If you fall in love with the way Chord DACs make music then DAVE won't disappoint.

I'd dare to say that, at the performance level of Utopia, something less than DAVE, in a world where DAVE is available, is wasting what Utopia can do. "Garbage in, garbage out": high end headphones with midrange or worse electronics is frankly unbalanced.

In my opinion Sabre DACs turn music into muzak. You should avoid at all costs.

Now playing: The Beatles - Good Morning Good Morning

My philosophy is if you have the funds, why not just end the search. Dave should be endgame with the Utopia, but like you said, it's not 100% consensus. And there are other options.

Mostly BS above. Sorry.

DACs are how their chips are implemented, not the chips themselves. Any sweeping statement about a chip vendor is BS.

The Utopias sound awesome on lot's of equipment (although they sound horrible on my Sony UDA-1), and sound better than their competition on just about any good gear. ~$2800 (cost of used utopia) you will not find a better dynamic headphone to pair with good to great gear. You do not need ultra expensive gear to enjoy the utopia, or to make the purchase worthwhile. The utopia is NOT wasted with gear that cost less than a Dave (just audio-snobbery to say so). You just need a good DAC and a good amp. I prefer an R2R DAC and tube amp with the utopia. I prefer the harder edge of a SS with the PMx2.

As a general rule, never listen to anyone that make sweeping generalities

:)

When you attempt to post a refutation, you should try not to contradict yourself.

Now playing: Lisa Germano - Sycophant

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I apologize. The DAC I prefer, the Bimby, happens to be an R2R DAC.

What album is that?
Happiness - There's at least two versions of this album, each with tracks that the other doesn't have:

https://www.discogs.com/Lisa-Germano-Happiness/release/1085619
https://www.discogs.com/Lisa-Germano-Happiness/release/594691

I have these two versions.
There's at least 3 versions of the song "dresses", best is on the EP Inconsiderate Bitch.

She's the only singer I've seen live who forgot the lyrics, but I don't mind :)

Now playing: Janek Schaefer - #91: Vertrek

I love the dichotomy between sites on audio "consensus'".

People on this site seem to love Chord, people on other sites love Schiit, and others love Metrum or MSB or whatever.

From the people I've spoke with who've tried a ton of TOTL dacs many of them hate Chord's lower end stuff, but even they tend to admit Dave can edge out Yggy. Gotta be something there.

Just joined the Utopia club btw. Anyone have an Eddie Current amp with the Utopias? Currently using WA7s and a Cayin iDac-6 and itching to upgrade.
