Do these eartips fit onto the SM3 without the need for modification?

No, they would fall off. I used the core tube of Shure Olive foamies as a spacer to get the PFE tips on the SM3.

Thanks for the graph. Where'd you get it?

A friend of mine measured my SM3. (B&K measurement mic > custom zero-impedance amp > Edirol soundcard > ARTA)

FX700 would again be somewhat warmish IMO, I'd rule these out.

Hi James!  Personally, I didn't find the FX700 to be "warm," hence the recommendation, but it is different than the BAs due to note decay.  The FX700 does have a lot of low end oomph, which I think is too much, but not in the warmth department, at least in my experience with them.  I do think the FX700 is leaner than the Turbine series...and I forgot to mention the RE252...

But again, if you want to spend $500ish, I would just go with customs...

Hi Joe, personally I concur with you, but since he says that ">90% of headphones out there are too warm" for him I was being extra careful with my recommendation.

Good point (as usual!); in that case I would also throw the Ety ER4 in there along with the RE0 on the lower end.

Have no clue about a Stax system but as far as your problem there's another option. The SM2. This is the route that Eric took when he found the low-ish mids to warm.

Also did you try removing the filters??? A couple of ppl recommended this saying it providing a more cleaner sound and well as more balance.

Edit: Walks out of the room and tries to find "Eric".

Those avoid thickness like a model running from a buffet line.

Earsonics can do that for you!

I've emailed them with the following:

to contact AT earsonics.com and

Kozee could probably reshell them for you and add a detachable cable if you wanted to send them to the states, or UM could do it also.

them.

Hello,

The cable on my SM3 has recently broken, under the Y-split, only after about 1/2 year from purchasing it. When the cable below the y-split is disturbed there is distortion in the right ear, or it cuts out.

I was wondering:

a) Could you recable my SM3 with a different cable (I really dislike the stock one, it's too short from the earpieces to the y-split)

b) Could you make the cables removable like on the new westones and shure 535.

c) How much would these cost respectively and how long would it take for the repair turnaround (I'm in Sydney, Australia).

Best Regards,

I think ER4 does sound a bit thin, but not RE0. RE0 is only lean in the lowest sub bass. In the mid bass and through to the upper treble it is quite full, especially with the stock large bi-flange tips, with which the sound of RE0 reminded me a lot of SE530.

I doubt they'd be able to make the cable removable, but if they do, I will send my stuff in right now to do it while getting my custom tips.

Just paired the SM3 up with the Xenos 1HA-EPC 'portable' amp.

The treble energy took off with it, which is weird when the 1HA-EPC is a rather mellow amp IMO o.O

Makes playing out of the Sansa Fuze sound very.... muffled (?) in comparison? Not sure how to describe it.
Lacks the space and airiness I guess, its like the SM3 just jumped up several notches on the treble energy department.

Very different than just using the headphone output of the uDAC alone as well (which sounds very warm IMO)

For the record, my setup for trying this out = Desktop USB -> uDAC -> 1HA-EPC Amp -> SM3

I think that's fair.  Now that I recall, using the Meelec Biflanges the upper bass on up was neither thin nor rich to my ears on the RE0.  The lack of low end was what stood out most and that was using my Gumstick which puts out a decent amount of power relative to something like the Clip+.  I actually AB'd the ER4S w/ the RE0 and the ER4S had the better balance and low end despite being thinner.  The ER4S actually blew the RE0 out of the water in the low-end for the most part.  I would take the texture of the RE0 over the 530 myself w/o question.  The 530 was the most textureless, sterile sounding IEM I've heard which for me was somethin I couldn't get past.  I see why people like it though, just not my thing.

As for amping the SM3 I never really got much improvement on them even though I tend to prefer amping most everything I have.  They scaled least for me compared to most everything I've tried.  I guess if I ever get the chance I should give them another listen.
