your question begs to know what headphone/iem you plan on using.... that is an important option to know when given the choice you asked about... you might end up needing to add a external amp to get more power...
Oppo PM-1, DCA E3, Austrian Audio Composer. I don’t have any IEM’s yet - but been looking at UM Maven 2, Symphonium Crimson, Sennheiser IE900. Thanks

I haven't tried any of these headphones or IEMs and I'm a total noob with the DX340 however in true Internet tradition I will not let my lack of experience and qualifications prevent me from making a comment.

I think it might be a stretch for the DX340 to power Dan Clark Audio E3.

I use my Grado GS3000x cans with the DX340 but they are very easy to drive and they do sound better when I have the mains power plugged into the amp module.

I think the Austrian Audio Composer and the Oppo PM-1 cans might work fine with the DX340 as the technical specs for those suggest they will work with it, however I haven't tried them myself.

I have an Oppo PM1 that I never use, maybe I can give some insight.

Kinda wish I still had my Audio Zenith PMx2.

Option 1: DX340 and amp16 and amp 17 or 18. Option 2: D16 and PB5 being fed by iPad. Would there be any discernable difference in sound quality? Desktop and home use only.
@Psychonaut71 The short answer is option 1 being the best... why? The D16 and PB5 were released as stand alone Amp/DAC kits for the ibasso MAX line ... so think of them as stand alone functional Amp/DAC kits.... and in the DX340 line up the Amp kits are integral to the player and offer more power than the MAX line... so the DX340 is the new MAX.. at least spec wise.... looking at the spec sheet for the PB5 we also get the answer to one of my questions yesterday about why the Amp14 uses 1.8v LO... and the answer is on the PB5 spec page that warns you not to drive the PB5 over 2.5v or risk damage to the tubes...
Ipad does not offer balanced output, think of the DX340 balanced output (4.4mm) as a miniature mono block amp stage... so each stage has its own components and with most balanced amp stages it doubles the power output... please don't confuse more power just means louder volume... more power is your friend to higher quality output...
with the Amp14 LO yesterday I plugged the DX340 into the Cayan C9 and tested the super hard to drive Modhouse Tungsten.... it worked perfectly fine... I think the DX340 is all about variety of options... you want portable... just plug your IEMs into your choice of AMP... Solid state, Nu Tube or Ray Tubes and more thats coming for us to have even more variety... if you need more power then plug the 12V into an Amp card with that option.. and if you need even more power then just plug the DX340 into a external amp and you got that covered too...
There are several APP options available on the Android side that are not available to run on the IPAD too... Options and Variety is going to offer the quality output for you....

Thanks so much, that’s really insightful. I’m a little hesitant because I’ve never used android in my life, and it seems quite daunting hearing about how to remove bloatware etc. but maybe it’s time to take the leap!!

ha ha... the learning curve isn't that far off from IOS... but due to the way Apple protects its structure it isn't as open as the Android OS...

DX340 Firmware update. The download for use with an SD card and the .img FW for the 660/665 Tool to flash the firmware.

1. Rectified the bug that when playing music, there is a low possibility that the sound stutters.
2. Rectified the bug that occurs when playing DSD in USB-DAC mode, only H2 works.
Thx! Good timing. Hope it does fix the pop/crackles I hear. Need this ready for CanJam Shanghai.

Edit after Update: Glad to say that it has!!

Thing is, you don't have to worry about debloating Android immediately, the Mango O/s bypasses Android and allows you to play local music files on the DX340 or from your computer in USB DAC mode. Use DAC mode to stream Apple music through the DX340.
Some folk decry Mango O/s and it can be a bit clunky but I find the music quality to by more than adequate.

From what I can tell, MangoOS boots from the same Android/Linux kernel as normal Android. It seems MangoOS then loads a "container-app" (the player) instead of loading/initiating (the rest of) Android OS. The cool thing about tweaking Android is, that you can also tweak/optimize kernel parameters. I have not yet figured out how to do that under MangoOS. Personally, I think fully tweaked Android sounds better than MangoOS.
