You can connect balanced ear/headphones to a single ended output without issue but should never connect single ended ear/headphones to a balanced output.

Very basically this is because the balanced output has dedicated ground paths for each channel and by plugging single ended ear/headphone jack into that output will directly connect the 2 grounds together (there is only one ground in single ended) in the amplifier output = bad news.

It is for this reason I have opted for the Amp7 vs. the Amp8 as an upgrade for my DX220...all my IEM cables are 3.5mm SE and I didn't think the diff between the 8 vs. 7 would be worth also having to invest in balanced cables...

I REALLY like the ISN AG8 cable. $200 . Solid silver, 8 wire. You'd have to spend over $400 to beat it. Not bright, like a lot of silver cable. Accurate, detailed, with a fantastic sound stage and layering. I'm selling my 3.5 and am getting a 4.4 for my incoming Amp8EX FE.

Yes, he is my shortlist too. I don't know if it would be a problem for me to have a thicker cable without ear hooks.
Also look in the direction of Penon Leo Plus ,I think I could handle that price.
