Thanks so much for the good info, just got back from vacation, so I didn't have time to respond. Now it's a toss-up between the sr325i, which someone on /g/ recommended, or the HE-400. Off to make a new thread/post in the HE-400 owner's thread.

Lol /g/ is extremely outdated in terms of audiophile headphone knowledge, they rely 99% on this infographic image made 3 or 4 years ago.

Hi, I have sr80i and he400. They have a similar sound signature. But HE400 have more sub-bass, bigger soundstage, and better separation than the sr80i.Definitely a big step up. SR80i for some tracks drill my head due their highs emphasis, while He400 don't

Two year plus owner of 325i here.

It's a wonderful can, just no really deep bass.  I'm not a bass head but I gots to feel that orchestral bass drum up against my earbone on occastion.  I think I'll be keeping the Grados, they just do some things so well.  I am tempted by the HE-400 but HiFiMan scares me.  I think it's about all those models and versions.  Which one am I going to get and next month, will there be a different version/model that will be even better and cheaper?  Besides, I've heard the 5LE extensively and wasn't all that impressed.  To that end, I ordered a pair of 990 600 ohm today.  I want to hear that Grado upper mid and that planar bass.  Color me colored.

I'm sure I'll be posting my impressions for those interested.

They use Gentoo, what's to be expected!

Nah, Gentoo's awesome. The problem is that almost all of the threads on /g/ are either about RMS, crappy attention-seeking desktops screens, or to show off their mediocre programming that they spent 5 minutes learning off of w3schools.

I mean, of course their headphone knowledge is outdated. RMS, really? Didn't everyone stop giving a crap years ago?

I have AB'd the two side by side, but not super in depth.  I prefer the HE-400 by sound signature alone.  The DT990 is a very unnatural sound, but if you like that kind of sound then more power to you.

I did an AB of the 880 vs 990 32ohms. The 990 sounds a lot thicker than the 880.

Is the HE400 towards the 880 or the 990 ?

The reason is because my local retailer didn't carry the HE400 :(

Do you think you can help to describe more?

Thanks a bunch.

I've not heard the 880.  To me the HE-400 sounds thicker than the DT990 just because it has a lot more lower mids to it.  The DT990 sounds cold in comparison, if you know what I mean.  Conversely, the HE-400 might sound muffled in comparison if you're used to the DT990 sound, but it's actually the faster headphone.

Fast forward almost six months later.

I decided the mid-bass of the 990 600 interfered too much with the nice sub-bass that it had, just too much bass in general.  I then got the 880 600 after getting the 32 by mistake, twice (amazon warehouse, nobody looks at the box to determine which ohms are requested).  It's kind of like a warmer 325is.  It has a slightly smaller soundstage (I use, gasp, G-Cush,)  I've still got it because I like having more than one can and it's not offensive.  Still tempted by the HE400.  Maybe I'll try one this spring/summer.  I read where the 400 is the most Grado like of the HiFiMan line.

Well I can't be too sure of that-- I've never hear a Grado.  HE-400 definitely has the treble, but I think it might be the most un-Grado like of the Hifimans.  Its upper mids are laid-back while I heard most Grados have a very upfront and aggressive upper midrange.  The HE-4 might be more like a Grado, or the HE-6.

Interesting.  You're right of course about the aggressive upper midrange.  Thanks for the info.  More crap to think about.

How dark is dark? I've listened to the LCD2 and it's really dark as compared to 990.

How does he400 compares to lcd2?

I've not heard the 880.  To me the HE-400 sounds thicker than the DT990 just because it has a lot more lower mids to it.  The DT990 sounds cold in comparison, if you know what I mean.  Conversely, the HE-400 might sound muffled in comparison if you're used to the DT990 sound, but it's actually the faster headphone.

I'd imagine it would sound close to the LCD-2.

Here you'll find a little piece of information regarding the differences between HE-400 and LCD-2.

Comfort is a big issue for me, and I'm guessing the DT990s are more comfortable since they are 290 grams, while The HE-400s are a lot heavier at around 440 grams. However, I've read that the headband of the HE-400s distributes the weight well and they are sufficiently comfortable. Is this the case and could present or past owners of both headphones comment on how they compare in terms of comfort? Thanks.

The DT990 are initially more comfortable for me, however over time I don't like them as much because the headband has more of a pressure point and the pads are smaller so your ears are always touching the cloth in front of the driver.

Thanks for the reply. Do the velour pads of the HE-400 improve the comfort?
