I'd sometime love to try some of the 600 Ohm Beyers though to hear what they are capable of.

mmm..where do I start:

DT48A, DT48E, DT48S
DT96A
DT770 80 ohm, DT770 250 ohm Pro, DT770 Consumer Edition, DT770 600 ohm, DT770 32 ohm
DT880 32 ohm, DT880 250 ohm 2003 version, DT880 250 ohm 2005 version, DT880 600 ohm, DT880 1980's version
DT990 32 ohm, DT990 250 ohm, DT990 600 ohm
DT231 pro, DT231 'galactic'
DT331
DT431
DT531
DT660
DT150
DT250
DT234 Pro
MMX 1, MMX 2, MMX300

enough? :p (I'm 100% sure I've missed some).

I agree that Beyer should have separate model numbers (even if only slightly different) for it's pro models. But I don't think one can fault them for offering different impedance versions of their main 3 cans - in fact, I think they are to be applauded for that.

I agree. But I wonder how they do that with the "same" driver (quotes intentional)?

You missed the T1.

So today I took Goldy to the beyer booth. As I arrived a bit early (as intended) I had quite some time (roughly 15 minutes) to do a comparison.

Long story short:
The T1 is closer to the DT770/600 than it is to the DT880, no matter which model.
But the T1 is better in almost every aspect. It easily reveals more details, it opens up the stage a lot more effortless, it has absolutely no problems with transient response (one the the two things constantly being criticized about the beyers) and resolves even better. The T1 has more mid bass but I still wouldn't say it's overpowering the mids or something like that.

I hope this is of some value to some of you!

And remember: first impression under trade show circumstances, with prototypes and with mediocre amps (IMHO!).
So take it with a grain of salt, cause your mileage may vary.
Hope that's clear enough, now!

Oh, and I still didn't forget about your questions. I will answer them, promised. I might just take some time!

The drivers are not exactly the same - the voice coils are wound differently, IIRC.

I predict that this headphone will amaze all and sundry when harnessed with an appropriate amp. It seems to me that the limiting factor here is that amp provided by Beyer. Time will tell.

Well said. ^^

I've not been around these parts much of late (uhh, Head-Fi, that is), and thus missed this thread until now - so it's a news flash to me! About all I can say is that it's always a good thing when a company like Beyer steps it up a notch. Perhaps the HD800 had a signaling effect in the market and we'll soon be seeing more competition at the top level from other manufacturers as well. One can only hope.

But I'll probably tune out of this thread for a while. I mean, really... we're at 21 pages and so far only one person has heard these new creatures (well, sort of heard them - they were prototypes) and even then, under trade show circumstances (read: loud), and with mediocre amps. Hmmm... not much to go by there.

But it's still interesting to see all of the enthusiasm and, naturally, all of the speculation. Hopefully, I'll get a chance to hear them one day. I'll be sure to offer my opinion at that point.

That's where and why I bailed out of the big HD 800 thread after a few pages of moonshine. But here I don't see any glorification or cable-mania of a prototype. And I know m00k00h as down-to-earth. Sufficient reasons that I'm staying tuned here.

I heard them in Berlin and liked then better than the HD800s ... Could be that I hate Elton John's music which was in the Senn SACD player......
Pic of the Senn setup:

I was in a hurry and FORGOT to take pics of the Beyer! They have very angled drivers though and were being driven by a new Beyer amp and Olenbach cables from a CD player.

They probably assumed that if you were spending well over 1k on a pair of open headphones, they wouldn't be doing much travelling or other "dangerous" activities.

T1 looks very fragile ? It looks like the DT880 and it's one of the more sturdy headphones available. Someone mentioned that the black caps are now somekind of metal instead of plastics. So shouldn't this be more sturdy headphones ? I was wishing the earcups were bigger though.
