I cannot agree more on the hd800. I've been comparing them side by side with my T90 since my roommate has a pair and it's totally better in every aspect. But with the TH900, HD800 would probably be better but I like the fun sounding on TH900 more.

My 1st post here.
I need some advice. I have decided to invest in my first setup with a budget under 1k.
I am a total noob and really don't own any audio related stuff worth mentioning.
I have been reading many reviews on headphones, DACS, AMPs... in the past 2 weeks.
OK, so I have T90 on order, $250 seemed like a good price.
Is the Bottle head Crack still one of the best budget amp to pair with t90?
How about the WA3?

Also, am I doing the right thing getting t90 as my first serious cans? All this talk of unbearable treble...
Should I rather get something more neutral and less fatiguing like the HD600?
I have heard many people say the HD600 are great headphones to start with. Will the tube amp will work nicely with the hd600?

Since I know literally nothing about this hobby yet, I am trying to get as much info I can in order to avoid any pricy mistakes.

So in short. Should I keep the t90 or get the hd600 instead?
What should I pair it with? DAC, AMP, SOURCE...

Thank you!

since you have 1k budget to start with, getting either hd600 or t90 is a good choice itself. It is true that t90 is hot in treble and you probably want to get a tube amp with it. On the other hand, getting the hd600 would not require tube amp but It does improve the warmth of the hd600 even more. If you want to choose either WA3 or Bottlecrack, I would suggest WA3 since it's still in your budget but Valhalla2 also a great pair for T90. However, I roll the stock tube with 6dj8/ecc88 amperex orange globe made in holland to make it warmer. It works great taming the harsh treble on my T90.

A smooth, analog sounding DAC is going to be more important, as I've tried the T90 with a variety of amps and it is not very picky. A smooth DAC will tame the highs without sacrificing the T90s amazing resolution (which a mushy tube amp will do). I have the $250 modi multibit which fits that category and easily competes with DACs costing 3 to 4 times that much.

As far as amps, the $400 schiit Jotunheim which i also own is amazing for the money. Clean and clear with lots of slam. T90 also sounds great on schiit Valhalla 2 ($350) if you want to go the tube route without the mush (it is closer to solid state sounding with a hint of warmth). But it is more laid back sounding with not alot of slam. I have not heard the more expensive schiit Molnir 2 but it is supposed to add much more slam and is a tube amp.

The T90 sounds amazing on solid state as long as you have a smooth DAC.

At last, my modded T90s arrived today. They are a work of beauty! Just gave a very short listen with Kenny Burrel's 'Midnight Blue', 24/192 HiRes file. I very, very much like the sound of it. Very airy, out of a black background, and extremely detailed. I have a hard time telling which one I like better, the modded T90s or the Senn HD800. For one thing, I give the T90 a looong listen and will give you more infos. Spectacular work, really, modding them in such way.

  Thank you both.

ColtMrFire:
I will research the Schiit Valhalla 2 + Modi Multibit combo.
However, I don't see the Multibit on the Schiit product page, only the announcment.
I can't even find one online to purchase. Where did you get yours?

Will the Valhalla 2 be as good as the Bottlehead Crack or WA3 with T90or HD600?

I have not heard the Crack or the WA3, but I can tell you Valhalla 2 easily competes with top tier tube amps (and pairs beautifully with T90)... you would have to spend alot more money to get a better tube amp.  Like most Schiit gear, it punches well above its weight class.  This is why I have been sticking with Schiit gear, since I am on a budget and you usually get amazing quality for far less.

I see you are lucky enough to have a GSX MK2.  How does it pair with the T90?  I know people rave about the HD800 pairing.

I forgot to say that T90 is going to be far better technically than the HD600.  They are not comparable on a technical level.  But the HD600 offers a neutral and natural pleasing tonality people really like (even those with TOTL cans).  The HD600 was my first audiophile headphone so I have alot of respect for it, but I could not listen to it after hearing the T90, and especially the HD800.  But that's just me.  It was a great starter headphone, but I've moved on.

thanks again.
I have been checking some Schiit products.
What do you think about the Vali 2 + Modi 2?  I like that these 2 are the same size...
Isn't the Valhalla 2 supposed to pair with Bifrost?
Is there a big diffrence between the Vali 2 and Valhalla 2 with T90?
I am sorry if I am asking noob questions here :)
