I have a set of DT880 glued to my head for two and a half weeks now. Just sweet and nice. I have "forced" other none audiophile/headfi friends into listening and comparing all my phones from the SA5000, CD3000,V6,...etc to be Beyers.. And the reactions are interesting. All including I, love the Beyer sound.. Haven't tried any of the other models yet but I have a pair of DT770Pro on the way. Happy Listening!

It seems, looking back at this thread about a month after it started, that the DT880s are fussier than I at first thought...

They sounded good with my Sony source, no doubt about it... but after deciding in a moment of sheer boredom last weekend to rebuild the older of my two CD850s (it had been in pieces for just on four months... long story), I powered it up to make sure it still worked... after an hour the best sounding i've ever heard out of 'phones - vocals / guitar started coming out of the 880s... then, listening to a bit of electronica, the bass is seriously improved over that of the Sony...

...So, back to old school [source] for me... and it'll take anyone a long time to convince me otherwise... That being said, the RS1 and Sony do sound good together...

...As ever, its all in the synergy

Just got my DT770-80 the other day
I'm trying to drive it using Iriver H340 which has 32Ohm impedance.
I realize that my DT770 has 80ohm impedance.

is amps the only way to go ? i wanted to have a portable solution to it.

any input is appreciated.

Your iRiver can't have a specific impeadence that it drives. Its specs may say something like "30 mW into 32 ohms" but that just means that at 32 ohms it supplies 30 mW and at 80 ohms it'll supply less mWs. You may still want a headphone amp to give the headphones better sound but its not required.

Can I inject new life into this thread? Just got my pair of DT880 this week and I must say I'm blown away by its instrumental placement in an orchestra and its soundstage. Liquid smooth mids, nice highs (at least to my ears) and low tight bass.

I am feeling the Beyer love now...

For years, I tolerated the Sony V6s, which are in themselves a pretty good phone. But when my DT880s came from Todd the Vinyl Junkie in that amazing aluminum case, I was impressed.

A few months later, I tried my V6s on again, and could barely listen without tearing them off.

And as the post above suggests, they're a great value, most often compared to products considerably more expensive.

When I bought the DT880 earlier this year, I was very new to headphone listening. A member posted about the DT880's soundstage and asked what I thought of it. I replied that all headphones sounded "in your head" compared to speakers and have similar soundstage.

Now, after gaining more experience with headphones, I think that was a ridiculous statement. The DT880's soundstage is impressive and keeps me wanting to listen for hours.

That's it!
Enough said!
Enough comparisons!
I'm getting those DT880's and soon that Little Dot Tube I/II amp!

1- Where online can I get the best price/service for the DT880's?

Amazon : none
eBay : there's 2 with coiled cables for 240$/300$... yuk!
AudioCubes : none
B&H : 225$, it says in stock but some says it's not true! plz confirm.
HeadRoom : 259$ (is Cardas cable upgrade worth 449$? 190$ difference!)
Meier-Audio : 275$
Thomann.de : 246$
Todd : 279$ - 10% = 251$

Any other interresting reliable store? which to choose? which to avoid?

2- How much should I save on the purchase to endure the coiled cable?

Thanks!

I want to formally thank all the cool folks at Head-fi for turning me on to Beyer headphones, specifically the DT770 Pro80's. I love them, they are my main home can now. I really dig them, and if weren't for Headfi I would never have heard of them. So thanks!

I got a 20 yerar old DT 990, 600 ohm version.

I loved and still love those cans. For the last year I have been experimenting and modding it and I finally have come to a point where they are near perfect.

I now got a HD600 and the sound of thoses Senns is pretty smooth. However, I do find my DT 990 more neutrral after all the tweaking.

Good on you! I just got my DT880 about two weeks ago from Headroom for USD$225.95 shipped! That's by far the best price I've seen anywhere.

Quote the B&H Photo's price on the web and they will price match that. Also, they have free shipping to the US for anything above USD$40.

Cheers!
