Best can for up to $300 ?

Hi, im looking into getting a set of headphones for listening to my ipod and traveling with. I know the full size cans might be a little big to travel with but I will just keep them in a backpack for easy access.I dont really want the open cans even though I think I would really enjoy listening to them because iv heard acoustic sounds incredible on them but they leak sound and I would like to beable to listen to a good pair of headphones on an airplane. I have been looking at the beyerdynamic DT770 pros & the Allen & heath xd-53s. I like the xd-53s because they swivel and I can just rest them on my shoulders if I get tired of listening but the DT770s just seem like they would have better sound quality. I dont really know that much about headphones but I want to get the most quality I can for my money. I am interested in amping some headphones to to increase the performance. I would rather not spend over $100 on an amp though so im not really sure if it would be worth getting a cheaper amp.  Please let me know your opinion and what you would reccomend, thanks.

I like the suggestion that you made yourself on the dt770's. Good quality, built like a tank. Another closed rugged hp that is in your price range is Maddog's by Mr. Speakers. Sounds twice as expensive as it cost to my ears. It would need a amp though.

Yamaha Pro 500s best the Beyers in every way. Plus they're easier to drive for portability. More expensive, but they can be had for $300.

Thats the way forward. I got my first pair of good headphones from the form. DT880 (250 ohm version) for just 100 USD. Some good deals come up so just keep checking it.

I can only find them new for $400.. Say I shelled out the extra $ for the Yamaha pro 300s what would I be getting that the DT770s cant provide ?

MrSpeaker's MadDog's- Smooth, very detailed with great bass and wide soundstage. Very comfy for long sessions due to the thick pads and comfort strap build is top notch. These are the best headphones i have heard.
 
K550- detailed with good bass and wiiiide stage! these sound like an open pair of headphones and look great too. build is good also.
 
i listed these as i believe these are the best closed headphones.
 
 
I really like all of these headphones !! Such a tough decision for me. How much more would I be getting with the MAdDogs and the K550s compared the the DT770s ? I can get the 770s for $170 shipped compared to $300. I would be willing to spend $300-400 but I dont wanna be just throwing around money when I could get a similar product for much cheaper. Also, I dont know if anyone will beable to answer this but how much of the price in the MadDogs & K550s are just marketing ? I know when a lot of products come out they are marked up in price at a rediculous profit for the seller.. Are these marked up ?

Also does anyone have any suggestions on how many ohms my heaphones should be just for listening to high quality music on my ipod ? For example, 32 ohm,80 ohm & 250 ohm .

Don't. Portable amps are bulky, and I hated carrying it around. Plus the Yamahas still sound better even with the 80s + amp.
 
And TheReem, where did you read this? Because there was a guy who dedicated 100 posts proclaiming how they aren't worth the money. Thing is, he's never even heard them. I think they are definitely worth at least $300, and many who have actually heard them agree.
 
Yamahas are better all around. Treble on the Beyers can be painfully sibilant, while the Yams retain sparkle but are hardly ever sibilant. The mids aren't as recessed as the Beyers. And the bass is much cleaner and faster while still being powerful. The Beyers can get very muddy and distorted when pushed to high volumes. The Yams don't do this. Plus, like I said, you don't need an amp.

If you want to spend 300 for a pair of headphones, there are a lot better options than the Yamaha's. The DT770's are actually decent, with good bass. The treble can be overwhelming if you don't feed it high quality music, and can depend on source as well, but they are a great headphone for the price.
 
Also there are a decent amount of portable amps that are not "bulky" that can increase sound quality at a very low price. I would check out the C&C BH, if you are looking for something incredibly portable.
