Audio-Technica debuts three new pairs of headphones ATH-R70x, ATH-M70x and ATH-M50xDG

I tried the R70x today. Surprisingly, it is tonally very similar to AD2000/X without the mids coloration. Warm, organic yet resolving, with satisfying bass quantity for an open can. To my ears it is almost on par with the AD2k/X in terms of technical ability. Very impressive for the price!

If it sounds like ad2000, i am in.
But without mids coloration? I wonder how would it sound like. Ad2k coloration is what makes ad2k, ad2k.

Yodobashi camera will the easiest to locate i guess. Multiple stores in Tokyo.

(Thanks, also to fumoffuxx.)

I'm also familiar with Yodobashi.  I may try that route.

But also found that there is an Amazon Japan!  Easiest for me to do is to order there then send to my hotel.  Surprisingly, they sell for only 38,750yen in Amazon Japan.  That comes to about $326.  About $26 less than Amazon US.

Only downside ordering online is that I cannot audition it.

Before going over this thread, I was set on a Grado SR225 or 325.  But I auditioned the AD900X and liked that more.  From what I read in this thread, I think I will enjoy the R70X.  Stil, would have been good to hear first-hand before spending.

I'm in as well.
AD2000x is known to be better sounding than SRH1840 and HD650.

So, where does R70x fit in?
How would you rank R70x among HD650, Shure SRH1840, Audeze EL-8, AKG K702, K712 Pro, AD2000x?

The best part of R70x is that it uses 3.5 mm standard jack for headphone connectors just like HD700!
They can be used with Sony's PHA-3 MUC-B20BL1 balanced headphone cable without modification.

You just plug it in, then it's ready to be used with Sony PHA-3.

If you are aiming that question at me (since RedBull has not heard the R70x if I'm not wrong), here's how I would rank it among headphones I've heard/owned (haven't heard the AKGs, EL-8 and SRH1840, but added in some others I've heard):

AD2000/x = HD650 = HE-400i > R70x = HD600 > MSR7 = M70x > SRH1540 = Philips X1

If I were to rank the R70x among the AD series, it would be in between AD2000x and AD1000x.

Hope this helps.

The R70X may have more neutral and uncolored mids than AD2K, but it shares the same AD2K/X family sound of organic tone/quality in the mids, smooth and inoffensive treble, fast and textured bass. In that sense, I guess it is more similar to AD2KX than AD2K as the AD2KX is like a AD2K tuned towards neutrality. The R70X is slightly bassier than both the ADs though.

These trio of headphones sound more similar to each other than, say, headphones from other brands or even other headphones from Audio Technica.

This impression is from a short 30 minute audition, so please take it with a grain of salt. I would suggest waiting for Earfonia's comprehensive review of the R70x that's coming soon.

I'm a big fan of my ATH-500X and have always wanted the 2000x, but R70x may swayed me otherwise. So I'm looking forward to the reviews on it.

Thanks lalala6, i get the idea now. You also still prefer hd600 over it?

In what area it's 'less' good than ad2kx, hd600? Less detail? Less soundstage? Less smooth? Or?

It's been a while since I had the HD600, but I *think* I prefer R70X over HD600 because the HD600 has a slightly less refined (grainier) sound, from my memory. Both are excellent from a technical standpoint.

Compared to AD2KX, the R70X is equally smooth and has similar soundstage, but ultimately loses a bit in resolution and detail. I thought the R70X couldn't resolve some of the finer details that the AD2KX could, but it may have been my imagination as the auditioning environment was quite noisy, which might have masked out some details. Still, the R70X's resolving ability is one of the best I've heard in its price class.

It will be best to see a review from someone who owns and have spent some time with the R70X though! There's only so much I could tell from an audition. Looking forward to reviews from Earfonia and future R70X owners.

I saw r70x today at the local shop byt didn't have time to try it.
Curious how 'studio' version of ad2k would sound. I for once, prefer ad2k sound to ad2kx, yes yes ad2k is more colored than the x siblings but that's what i like about ad2k, it colors the vocal super nicely.

I, too, prefer the AD2K to AD2KX. In fact, after I heard the AD2K I immediately sold my AD2KX just to get the AD2K. But I think the R70X would work well as a cheaper alternative to the AD2KX, for times when you want a neutral yet similar to AD2K sound. The only downside is the R70X is much harder to drive than the ADs, with its 470 ohms impedance.
