ATH-R70x:

The ATH-R70x is A-T’s first pair of professional open-back reference headphones. Together with the ATH-M70x, they stand as a flagship model in our professional headphone lineup. Featuring specially designed drivers and acoustically transparent housings fashioned from aluminum honeycomb mesh, these headphones provide an accurate and natural open-back sound. The R70x also incorporates A-T’s popular self-adjusting 3D Wing Support Headband Design for greater comfort during prolonged use.

ATH-M70x:

Introducing the new flagship model in A-T’s acclaimed M-Series line: the ATH-M70x Professional Monitor Headphones. Designed specifically to bring out added detail in the mix, the ATH-M70x headphones feature proprietary 45 mm large-aperture drivers and are tuned to accurately reproduce extreme low and high frequencies (from 5 to 40,000 Hz) while maintaining perfect balance. They are ideal for studio mixing and tracking, FOH, DJing, mastering, post-production, audio forensics and personal listening.

ATH-M50xDG:

This year we are offering our most critically acclaimed model in the M-Series line, the ATH-M50x, in a stunning, dark green color scheme. The ATH-M50xDG Studio Monitor Headphones feature the exact same coveted sonic signature as the original M50, with the addition of refined earpads and three detachable cables. These are for the critical audio professional who’s seeking the purest sound – and distinctive style. Use them for professional mixing, monitoring and mastering or to hear your favorite songs exactly as intended.

I love ath as well, but I am no fan of cans, over or on ears...too much space, sound leaks...etc. Any superb sound quality ears buds will do just fine.

Cans are better used at home. When at home, I rather crank my loud speakers setup.

While the ath-m50xdg is just a new color scheme for the existing ath-m50x (similar to ath-m50xwh and ath-m50xbl), the ath-r70x and ath-m70x are all new! Personally I would love to see a red color scheme similar to the ath-m50rd! I like bright colors lol.

Good thing Audio-Technica has an excellent collection of iems!

Personally I prefer my m50x to iems when home, but if I had some nice loud speakers that might change

Wonder how they compare to the MSR7, they have the same frequency response and impedance, though they differ in sensitivity.

I prefer the rugged look of the M50X's more than I do with the minimal design on the M70X's.

As long if they sound good enough for an upgrade from my M50S then I guess why not get a pair!

The ATH-M70x are an interesting headphone for Audio Technica to bring out.  Statistically different in many areas than the M50x (5-40khz vs 15-28khz, 35 ohms vs 38 ohms, Max Input Power of 2000 mw vs 1600 mw).  But they look about the same size and design, and same size drivers (45mm).  The 70x is listed as a "rare earth magnet" vs. neodymium.  But, the 70x are being listed for $299 on BH vs $169 for the 50x.  I will be curious if they are really that much better...if at all.  They are still a lot of plastic like the 50s.  Time will tell.

Is the 70x constructed out of plastic?  It looks like it in the photos but the press release on the Audio Technica site says:

.
The NAMM Show, Anaheim, CA 01-22-2015 – Audio-Technica (booth 6740), a leading innovator in transducer technology for over 50 years, unveils its ATH-M70x Professional Monitor Headphones, the new flagship model in A-T’s acclaimed M-Series line of headphones. Designed specifically to bring out added detail in the mix, the ATH-M70x professional monitor headphones feature proprietary 45 mm large-aperture drivers with rare earth magnets and copper-clad aluminum wire voice coils and are tuned to accurately reproduce extreme low and high frequencies (5 to 40,000 Hz) while maintaining perfect balance. Featuring rugged, metal design, they are ideal for studio mixing and tracking, FOH, DJ use, personal listening, mastering, post production and audio forensics.

So I wonder if this is plastic or metal.  With the suggested manufacturer's price being US$419 (though as you say, B&H has preorders up for $299), it should be metal.

Excellent points everyone. Although remember the msrp for the m50x was $299 iirc... so maybe the m70x street price will be lower?

If I recall it was 249$ but it's often sold below 200. Unfortunately in some asian countries like Taiwan the price is relatively close to the MSRP (MSR7 is currently being sold for about 300$ USD, M50s around 170$, tax is included)

If that's the case the M70x may be sold for 350$.

When I tried out the MSR7 I didn't find it very sibilant but it was mid-forward, perhaps a bit thick. I hope the M70x has forward mids but not too thick.
