I see the 900X has different pads than the 900.

Audio Technica A900X has some parts from the A1000X, but i do not know how much.
Some have found a well broken in A900 to be better in some ways then a new A900X.
I'm assuming the A900X will improve after 100 hours or so of use.
So far I'm really liking my 3 day old A900X.

I would go for the A900X's if you do not intend to spend $200+ on an amp for the DT880's, though.  I had to upgrade my amp 2 or 3 times before I even liked the sound.
 
 
A buddy of mine compared the SRH-840's and the A900X's and claims they are similar enough to warrant selling a pair off.  I'm not sure about the FA-011's.
 
In short, the 840's should have more bass, but the A900X's will have more natural sounding bass with a wider, more lush midrange.

 
After auditioning the A900X's and SRH840s side by side, I can say that the A900Xs had more bass to my ears in addition to the wider sound stage.

There is a ladder with steps of about $70 apart, starting with the $150 something Shure SRH 840 to the A900x and finally to the K 550--priced at $300.

I've had my A900Xs for 14 days now, I'm thinking of sending them back.
The wings are just not stiff enough and the headphone keep sliding down to the top of my ears.
I used a rubber band to hold the wings closer to each other, now the A990Xs keep sliding up so the cups are now touching the bottom of my ears.
For the $256 ($240 + $16 shipping), they just do not seem worth it.
The sound it perfect, but I'm not feeling I'm getting my money's worth.

Mysteek thank you for the great review of the ATH-A900x!  I was in Hong Kong last week and had a chance to listen to a pair while at Mingo's, was blown away, ordered a pair as soon as I got home.  Only been listening for a few hours but bigger soundstage and higher SQ than my DT770 (250ohm).   So far the ATH-900x is the best sounding closed headphone I have found except for the D2000 and D5000, tempted to by a pair of D2000 and compare side by side.  Sounds like you have already done your own ATH-A900x vs. D2000 and named the ATH-A900x the winner. 
 
I am a little bothered by the "wings", the headphones keep falling down and the earcups come to rest on the tops of my ears.  Has anyone else had the same issue?  any solutions?

My A900X keep sliding down to the top of my ears too. $240 for headphones that can't stay in place.
So I'm thinking of sending them back. which is sad because they had the prefect sound for a closed headphone (for me).
You can use a rubber band between the wings, you need to find a rubber band with the correct length.
