Audeze Mobius review / impressions

Xm3 is better for portability and phone calls, Mobius has better sound, easier connectivity, and all the gaming/3D stuff. I travel a lot for work and only take the XM3, the trade off in sound quality isn't enough to justify carrying 2 pair of cans, and I have to have the Xm3 fo phone calls. When I'm home, I'm wearing the Mobius around the house and in the yard over the Xm3. I got the Mobius on Indigogo, so it didn't come with a carry case.

In my opinion, your uses are similar to mine. I wouldn't bother with the Mobius as a replacement for the Xm3 because of your mobile use, and if you use the Xm3 for phone calls. However, Mobius is awesome as a complimentary pair to use while at home for non-tethered music listening or when sitting at the PC gaming.
Thanks for the info. I suspect that I will do the same if/when I get the Mobius. Wear them while gaming, and then just unplug them and stream from my phone when I'm around the house, and just use my XM3s when out.

I had both qc35II and mobius, I could either return them either, or keep them both, but after a month I noticed that when I was using mobius I was surprised by many details, while when I was using QC35 I thought it didn't sound like mobius, and despite QC35 it was a bit more light and comfortable, mobius in the supplied bag, in my leather backpack, travels well and doesn't seem to be very much at risk of damage. I kept mobius and returned bose. NB. I'm not a player

I would like to delete all the gaming presets and reduce unnecessary rotation of the wheel. Even in games I find them to be a gimmick and worse than the Default / Music / Warm presets. I personally use Warm exclusively.

Edit: This was all fixed by a firmware update.....

@KMann I kind of agree here. Maybe instead of all of (or most of, as some people like the sound of some of them for music) the gaming presets, removing them could make way for other more useful features like a mode that boosts the volume of sounds that are nearer the player.

For instance I have been playing Forza 4 Horizon. Before the Mobius, I was using the Sony MDR-HW700DS 9.1 surround headphones (they are basically 7.1 headphones with Dolby/DTS features that can pick out sounds for the extra height channels. Subtle, but I notice it now I'm not using them.)

With the Sony's, it was very obvious when a car was coming up behind me, I could tell from which direction and move to counter. This is with the in-game music turned up beyond where the game developers initially set it. With the Mobius, they always take me completely by surprise.

Sony made 2 basic presets for their headphones. 1 for movies, and one for gaming. For the gaming preset they went to their game developers who helped them fine tune every aspect of it. It was much more than an EQ. Potentially this is something the Mobius could do, if it had the memory space of course.

I have written to Support about this and a couple of other suggestions, but have had no response. They were very helpful with my initial issue, and said they welcomed any suggestions and would pass it on.

This thread has been more useful in some ways. For a start, some of the suggestions I made seem to have been addressed in the firmware I updated to a few days ago. This was something support missed but really should have been one of the first steps.

How far from your head the virtual speaker locations are. i.e. ranging from Mobius' room ambience set to 0 and all sound is in your head, to room ambience set to 100 sounding like a large room.

When I first got the Mobius, my initial impressions were that at the default setting, the Mobius had a slightly larger space than the Sony. For instance in the Forza 4 Horizon, when passing cars that are driving towards you, the noise they make zooming past goes on slightly further. The Sony on the other hand didn't have the reverb that is added when using the ambience slider.

Overall the Sony's had great externalisation. I was expecting more of an increase with the Mobius, but I'm still very happy with the Mobius, especially with the latest firmware.

The Mobius is clearer in both movies and games. The Sony was quite clear sounding in games where the sound sources are much less complex than movies, but with movies the competing sounds were sometimes too much for the dynamic drivers to reproduce anywhere nearly as clearly as the Mobius. The Mobius is a big upgrade here.

It's a big enough upgrade that 5.1 music is now good to listen to with the Mobius, where it sounded awful on the Sony. For movies, even though it didn't have the clarity of the Mobius, it was still a pleasant experience.

You have to remember with the Sony that a lot of the cost went into the box that is also a 4k/60hz HDMI switch. It supports and can bitstream all the DTS/Dolby codecs up to their respective HD formats, and the headphones themselves are wireless RF. All the processing is done in the box, so (if you have the Japanese version like I do) you can buy another set of phones for about £100 and watch movies with someone else (up to 4 sets can connect)

I will test again properly later with the new firmware and see if I can make comparisons with the slider.

Thanks for that write up, itsi been a while since I'd used Sonys surround processing and appreciate a direct comparison with the Mobius. Thats very accurate to how I remember them. Not quite in your head but not very far out, and adequate in terms of sound quality.

I often find myself answering questions about what to suggest for movie/game use with smart tvs/settops, bdps, and consoles, and my main suggestions are still the hw700ds( the lossless decoidng and rf wireless) or something like a g6 or mixamp that can get lossy 5.1 over optical but use any headphone. I do believe the hdmi inputs on the hw700ds are 1.4 though, so an avr key would be necessary to pass 4k60 4:4:4.

If you're interested, a pad change to something like Brainwavz angled pleather makes a big difference in externalization over the stock Mobius pads.

This could be of interest yes, how easy are the Mobius' pads to remove and replace?
The stock pads are glued/taped to the to the colored rings and are secured with tabs so they just pop right off. The pleather mounting ring lip thing of the brainwavz pads slides right over the mobius cups and holds them in place perfectly, however, they dont create a good seal. in my case i made a plasric ring and a felt ring which helped make a really good seal. i just cut it out of the bottom piece of a plastic jewel case and used 1mm craft felt.

I would like to thank Audeze and my hearty friends for supporting me on my journey through the Mobius. After I received my LCD-2CB's yesterday to replace my Mobius for high-end listening I was super happy. No more worries about my Note 9 getting drained and no more Bluetooth fun (which the Mobius was awesome at) anymore. Old school connection and just perfect for rocking out here at the U of U. I will review the Mobius when I get my new M and D cable (USB-C to 3.5mm) in the mail but now my Mobius pair will be relegated to my video game streaming back in my home studio. The LCD-2's will become my default for everyday commuting and library chilling out.
Just curious, is there any point the LCD is off your head when u r on the move? How do you store them when u r on the move please? Seems not so backpack friendly . And finding a soft hard case that able to accommodate the huge tank is a challenge .

Once the tank inside the case would burst the backpack.

I basically wear the LCD-2's around my neck which isn't fun but usually I will either carry those in my hand physically or toss them into my Cotopaxi backpack which is very lightweight as most of the time I wouldn't be carrying around my Surface Book 2 15 on most days at school.

For those of you who own both. how does the Mobius sound next to the LCD-2s? (or classics)

Also any good amazon based recommendations for headband padding?

Möbius is excellent sounding for the price but it is not on the same level as the lcd2cs. It’s not really apples to apples since LCD2c is open back and requires and amp. I doubt too many would cross shop these.
