Audeze LCD-2 Impressions Thread

If we're nominating which headphones as the polar opposite of the LCD-2, the Sennheiser HD800 are a strong candidate; they have rolled off bass and a treble peak around 6 kHz. The HD600/650 are more linear.
I was about to say Arya, comparatively speaking, planar with planar

I've heard the same - but I didn't want to go too crazy, I still want to enjoy the music <grin>

The HD800 are more similar to the LCD-2 than the HD650. HD800 has decent bass extension and similar bass clarity with slightly more body than the LCD-2 bass. Both the HD800 and LCD-2 have recessed upper mids and 6k peaks but where the LCD-2 tilts dark the HD800 rises to provide more air and extension. Obviously timbres are different, the LCD-2 has a more plasticky timbre where as the HD800 has a more steely timbre.

HD650 is more of a natural timbre with a mid bass hump where as the LCD-2 is leaner, lacks bass boost and some more forward upper mids giving female vocals more body and presence so I'd say the HD650 and LCD-2 are a good combination to have as they tend to have different strengths. I do think the HD650 is a better all around headphone however.

It also important to be clear which LCD-2's we're talking about as the older LCD-2s had a more lush type of sound where as newer LCD-2's sound thinner, more gritty. older LCD-2's also didn't have the weird 1k tenting and no 6k peak so sounded more smooth as a result.

I think your LCD-2Fs are broken :dt880smile:

Having listened to both HD800 and LCD-2F, they don't sound anything at all alike to me. Of course, that's a subjective observation, so here's the FR of the LCD-2F, 2014 and 2016 as measured by Audeze. That graph doesn't resemble the HD800, and I don't see any 6k peak... nor do I hear one.

Then again, the graphs you're showing from the Neumann KU100 that Audeze uses for QC'ing unit to unit variation is not an IEC standardized measurement rig so cannot be compared to other graphs from i.e. GRAS equipment. I would trust what oratory1990 puts out, for example, and the current version of the LCD-2F is quite off FR wise - not like it used to be, compared to what Tyll measured on older units, even Fazored ones, with his Head Acoustics HMS.

I didn't say they sound the same I said they have more similarities which are bass extension and cleanliness, 6k peak and upper mid hole. That graph is smoothed over to hell and doesn't reflect the other measurements, those graphs need to be taken by a massive grain of salt. Audeze don't even supply graphs anymore because they want their reveal plug in to "fix" the sound.

I'll say it again. HD800 tilts bright where as the LCD-2 rolls off but both do have 6k peaks and both have similar bass quality but the HD800 has more bass body. My point was the HD800 has more in common with the LCD-2 than the HD650, the HD650 is rolled off but that's the only thing they share.

We all hear differently. The HD800 is so bright I find it un-listenable. But I can listen to the HD650. That alone tells me the HD800 is more different from the LCD-2F than the HD650 is. At least to me, perceptually. The Oratory1990 graphs I posted above show a thread of truth to your comparison description. But to me, personally, the difference in tonality from 2 kHz on up is so massive it swamps everything else.
