Anyone know if the asus xonar u3 will pass optical outfrom the s3?

It requires drivers on windows to do some of the optical features, so if I had to guess I'd say yes and no. It might be able to do stereo over optical, but I doubt it would do anything like Dolby Headphone or 5.1 output. But I have an iPhone and can't test that for you. If I can get an android soon I'll give it a test run.

im pretty sure the sansa clip cable is a USB 'B' cable... could that be the issue?

I am not sure to understand what type of cable you use.

A standard USB DAC like the iBasso D2 operates only as a USB peripheral. It only interworks with a USB host.

The Nexus 7 is a USB On-The-Go device.
A USB OTG device can act as a USB host or as a USB peripheral.

Simply put, a USB OTG device, like the Nexus 7, acts as
. a USB peripheral when a Micro-B plug is inserted [regular cable]
. a USB host when a Micro-A plug is inserted ["OTG cable"]

Nexus 7 as USB peripheral:
. Nexus 7 – regular cable – PC / Mac as USB host
. Nexus 7 – regular cable – upcoming specific Android Jelly Bean-compliant USB DAC as USB host

Nexus 7 as USB host:
. Nexus 7 – "OTG cable" – USB mouse as USB peripheral
. Nexus 7 – "OTG cable" – standard USB DAC as USB peripheral

An Android device is often connected to a USB DAC by a combination of two cables:
. OTG cable: Micro-A male to Type-A female USB cable

. regular cable provided by the USB DAC manufacturer: Type-A male to Mini-B male USB cable

I have a USB OTG cable which i have connected to my Nexus 7. I use this for connecting USB memory sticks with stickmount and it recognises them for access to external storage. To connect the Ibasso to the Nexus I have connected the USB OTG to the Nexus, then a USB micro B cable connected to the Ibasso. In this mode the Nexus would be working as a 'host' device? I didnt get a USB cable with my Ibasso as it was purchased secondhand.. Cheers, Mick

For anyone using an IBasso DAC with their device - how does the 'link' light behave. Does it stay on once you plug in the DAC ?

Is there any just microusb - analog line out cable ?

It would be cool just to use a little amp like my iBasso T3 to overcome the headphone out lack of power instead of being forced to go with a whole dac setup (much more bulkier, expensive and power hungry).

Yes, the micro A plug of the USB OTG cable should switch the Nexus 7 to the USB host mode.
I suppose you has successfully tested the iBasso D2 & the USB micro B cable with a PC.
Could you provide a dmesg output?

Any word on the Samsung galaxy nexus and working solution for USB audio? Looking at possibly a fiio e7.

Apparently, a DIY USB DAC is working with a Galaxy Nexus running on a modded kernel & AOKP and AlsaMixer available on Google Play Store.
http://translate.google.fr/translate?hl=fr&sl=ja&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fdevlog.grim3lt.org%2F2012%2F10%2Fandroidgalaxys3usb-dac-galaxynexus.html
http://devlog.grim3lt.org/2012/10/androidgalaxys3usb-dac-galaxynexus.html

However the sound is choppy.
The AlsaMixer is likely set up to 48kHz, and his music got ripped at 44.1.
The immediate solution should be to re-rip the music at 48.
The long-term solution should be to find a way to set up the AlsaMixer to 44.1kHz.

This DIY USB DAC is also working with a stock Galaxy S III.

Thanks DanBa. Appreciated.

So it's a real line out and not a rerouted headphone out?

If so It's a shame that Fiio or some other have not come up with line out cable like the gazillion of lods that ara available for  iPods.

I think that just an amp would suffice for the S3.

The ODAC using the USB controller Tenor 7022 interworks with the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 2.
The ODAC has some issue with a custom Asus/Google Nexus 7.
