Android phones and USB DACs

No idea... which version of android is it running? USB audio was only semi standardised in jelly bean.

they are on 4.0.4, and soon the sola will get the ics 4.0.4 also(the sola is a cheap xperia, with a worse camera and processor then the Xperia S, but accepts microSD cards.. but has all those sony nifty things walkman app, "bravia engine hd" and all that marketing stuff). all of these new xperia phones seems to boast the latest "sony walkman audio player app for android" when updated to ics.

They aren't clear yet if those are getting JB anytime soon, but if it's a JB exclusive thing (the usb audio driver. cause Xperias with ICS already do the OTG normal stuff like reading pendrives...) i guess we are kinda "stuck" with s3 for now. samsung is doing great.

Then again you can always try CyanogenMod 10 and get a JB rom but that seems to be quite buggy on Sony devices atm. I'm not sure it has the usb-audio driver either

I can confirm that the nexus 7 does indeed drive an e17 (assuming you turn off the usb charge) just fine.  You just have to use the kernel that DanBa posted as that will enable usb OTG, I myself am very happy about this because I have been dying for a decent DAC on an android device and since I've been stuck on verizon, there haven't been many good ones coming out when I was getting new phones.

Could you post a link to the kernel please?

Works for me :)

Brand new product from Ray Samuel :  " The Intruder ":  sort of SR71B (fully ballanced AMP) but... WITH a DAC !

--> This may be the ultimate "ONE BOX ONLY" solution for Android phone/tablet ?

Plus, I will be also able to use it with my laptop...to justify the buying cost :)

PS : I have iMac/iPhone/iPad (sorry, sorry....)  but... I start to consider using android rather than iPad for my "mobile audiophile" station. I am being feed-up with the constraints of Apple like the encripted digital signal, the syncro that HAS to be done through iTune, no memory expansion possible...

I already dream of :  Galaxy3 or tablet + 128 Go of loseless music inside + the above DAC/AMP attached to it.....   is it possible ?

--> Since I am ignorent to Android (an iTruc geek... until now), please can you help  me PLEAAASSEEEE :

- if the quality of the available players are high enough to provide High quality sound (through an external DAC/AMP).
- I am used to "Shazam" a song that I like and download it through the iTune store (only AAC compressed
mad.gif
). All this in 3 minutes.  Is it as simple with Android ? Where Android users download music from ?

- what is the maximum storage ( MUSIC only) possible on a large android phone/tablet (including an extra memory card).
- What is the phone or tablet that is the most appropriate to my project of "mobile audiophile" station ?

Many thanks in advance

Android would be pretty much limited to 44.1/16 because everything is re-sampled automatically.

I am also interested in massive storage for a portable rig. This one looks interesting and it will run both Android and Linux:

http://www.linuxbsdos.com/2012/09/11/cubieboard-raspberry-pi-competitor-with-sata-port/

We could possibly fit an Apple Macbook Pro Retina SSD inside that Linux box and going up to 768GB with this adapter:

http://www.shopsintech.com/product_info.php?products_id=761

Sweetest setup ever.

How portable? Does not sound very portable. Sounds like Gym.

EDIT: nvm, sounds big, but is not really.

Wow, that could be nice. I wonder whether it has it's own internal power supply though, if not that could be an issue with using it with the S3.

I already dream of :  Galaxy3 or tablet + 128 Go of loseless music inside + the above DAC/AMP attached to it.....   is it possible ?

--> Not quite, but fairly soon. Once the 64GB S3 comes out this will be possible with a 64GB card (well, it'll actually be ~118GB of space available to the user), alternately once 128GB cards come out you could go about it that way (? possibly this year, certainly next year if not this year).

- if the quality of the available players are high enough to provide High quality sound (through an external DAC/AMP).

If you're talking the S3 then the sound isn't being handled by the device, so whatever player you choose should be fine.

- I am used to "Shazam" a song that I like and download it through the iTune store (only AAC compressed
mad.gif
). All this in 3 minutes.  Is it as simple with Android ? Where Android users download music from ?

Shazam and Soundhound both have purchase options available in Android, from memory both go to Amazon, which may or may not be helpful depending on where you are in the world. There are a few options available though, like 7-Digital for purchasing music in digital formats.

- what is the maximum storage ( MUSIC only) possible on a large android phone/tablet (including an extra memory card).

If you're talking tablets then it'll some somewhere in the order of 384GB+ (Transformer TF700 64GB + 64GB micro SDXC in the tablet body and 256GB full-sized SD card in the dock + possibility of further storage via USB drives plugged into the USB port). The Transformer lacks USB audio though and has a mediocre DAC onboard, but for maximum storage that would be the one.

- What is the phone or tablet that is the most appropriate to my project of "mobile audiophile" station ?

At this point in time probably the S3, since it works with external DACs and has good onboard storage options (unlike say the Nexus 7 with it's crippled onboard storage, which may still be OK if you're prepared/able to stream or OK with using something like the GoFlex Satellite to overcome storage difficulties).

Many thanks in advance
