Android phones and USB DACs

Not sure honestly, as I don't have any of those devices. If the 7-inch Tab 4 is similar in implementation to mine, I'd assume it works with a variety of devices, but I don't know for certain, of course.

One aside: Samsung was, at one point, notorious for using lower quality components in their wifi-only tablets than their cellular-enabled counterparts to cut costs in the unsubsidized wifi-only marketplace. Don't know how accurate or apropos that is in this instance, but it might be something to look into before you buy. Just a thought!

Have you seen anyone using a DAC with Tab 4 at all?

10.1 tab 4 works very well with nearly all of the products our there. I had a Nexus 7. It couldn't drive majority of DACs. I think size of battery kinda matters.

To add to Theogenes's contribution on Samsung tablets, I have a Samsung 10.1 Tab Pro running 4.4.2, which I was pleased to find would work with my iFi Nano iDSD without UAPP or Hiby. Also I have found it to be more 'robust' than using other phones with UAPP, by which I mean there are virtually no breaks in the audio ( I get the occasional glitch with other phones running UAPP with the iFi ). The tablet will also work with a Dacmagic XS without UAPP but unfortunately only through a powered hub. The iFi Nano is excellent but I am also impressed with the Dacmagic which I obtained for £50 on Black Friday - it's a really small portable device with a useful analogue volume control. It's a pity that it just seems to use a bit too much power. I found that it would work without a powered hub with my Sony Xperia Z Ultra to begin with, but after running it down to about 50% battery power and plugging in again after a break, then it would not work properly - so it's right on the borderline !
Regarding the headphone out on Samsung tabs, I am on my 4th Samsung tab and all have been wifi only and I have found all to be pretty good. I prefer listening through a dac because it is easier to control volume levels which can also be a bit louder where needed.

Yeah that £50 deal was so good! :) It's a lovely little device. Nice build quality too.

I use mine with a Samsung Galaxy S4 (with UAPP) and it doesn't seem to care about battery level. The Dacmagic XS does get warm though - so I guess it's not particularly power efficient. Hopefully that wasted heat is a result of a decent voltage regulator.

Hey! Could you help me out a bit. I'm wondering if you are using your M8 in your car? Could you tell me what setup you are using in layman terms? I have a z3 and I want to connect it to my car audio system via USB as the auxiliary sounds terrible. I would also like to be able to stream spotify and the such. So using my phone as a media storage device is not my goal.

I'd appreciate any advice, I've been combing the internet and most things go over my head.

Thanks

Other than my 8.0 Tab 4, I have not. Mine replaced my Nexus 7, incidentally.

Just use an USB DAC compatible with the native Xperia Z3:

Z3 >> USB OTG cable >> compatible USB DAC >> car audio amp (via its auxiliary input) >> car audio speakers

Such a compatible USB DAC could be an AudioQuest DragonFly v1.2:

Yes, please save your money and get real good In-Ears with great sound signature and qualitiy. This tiny built-in USB DAC with a cheap dynamic In-Ear is a good gimmick not more.

Agreed!

But most non-HeadFiers  could prefer a convenient all-in-one setup such as the Zorloo Z:ero.

Android phone >> Z:ero: USB DAC > amp > earphones

Most HeadFiers should prefer setups using replaceable separate components.
The USB DAC/amp of the Z:ero is almost the same size as the AudioQuest DragonFly.

DragonFly + JH Audio Roxanne:

Another DragonFly-based setup:

Hi everybody, first post here.

Just reporting that my Fiio E10K is working like charm with my Nexus 5 (Android 5.0 Lollipop). Seems like there is a new function in Lollipop, because I tried it before and it didn't work.

Nexus 5 (Android 5.0 stock) >> USB OTG cable >> Fiio E10K >> Headphones -- Working!!!
Nexus 5 (Android 4.4 stock) >> USB OTG cable >> Fiio E10K >> Headphones -- Not Working
Galaxy S3 (SlimKat 4.4) >> USB OTG cable >> Fiio E10K >> Headphones -- Not Working

I sent back my Nexus 7. I will get Tab 4 7.0 next week.
I'll try to use a microSD to SD adapter and 256GB SD card. I think they will fit into Tab 4's leather case. We will see.

Keep us posted man! :)
