Amps that can drive the HiFiMan HE-6 planar headphones

Thanks! I'm still surprised that it sounds
so so much at 10:)

If your DAC has a high output, the volume on your amp will be so much louder at a given setting. On the other hand (as we both know) the HE-6 is a very inefficient headphone, so I understand your surprise.

Near 0...   Only the SLIGHTEST hiss is audible at 90-100% volume...   I really can't even get much past 11 o'clock on my head and the volume pot goes to almost to 6 o'clock..  -You would never hear anything but music powering the HE-6 on PM 500..  No concern whatsoever...  My PM is relic though..  The condition is very exceptional.....

I also run my HE 6 from the speaker taps of a Marantz PM500. The power level meters stay at 1.5 W @ 8 ohms (or 3 W @ 4 ohms) during my listening sessions. So I don't understand when you say the above highlighted statement ? My volume knob stays @ around 8 o'clock, are you saying that your volume know goes to 5 o'clock :basshead: but that will blow the drivers.

Any experiences with Mcintosh amps and the HE-6? I bought an MA6100 and I'm excited to try it. I know the Pioneer SX-1050 is popular and I've had the MA6100 compared favorably to it for speakers.

Punit,

Here is a pic of HE6 sounding loud and lovely, belting out Jill Scott.. HE6 isn't on full boil till u get that little chuffing sound...

@bigkef is the EQ in or out for that pic?
If 'in' - that's a lot of bass boost you have applied my friend.

I've had an EAR 834 integrated in the house for a few days. Fantastic sounding amp which narrowly edges out my Krell. Goes back to it's owner tomorrow.

Maybe I missed this but, this being a tube amp, how did you connect the HE-6s to it - did you use the HFM box?

This amp is special in that it doesn't need it.

Do you know what's speciul? I wonder if other tube amps are special in the same way...

I'm highly suspicious of claims that vintage amplifiers are all that wonderful. The simple fact is, circuit components are better than what they were in the 80s and 70s. Testing and design tools are vastly superior today. I can't help but notice that the majority of -- if not all -- glowing claims of vintage gear come from those who haven't spent any time with modern high-end audio gear. Which would make sense, because someone who is seeking vintage gear to begin with is very cost-conscious. Someone who is very cost-conscious may only have low-quality gear against which to compare vintage pieces.

Yea.. when the U.S. sent a man to the moon in 1969, and SpaceX had 2 rockets blow up in 2015......
Things have gotten better, but let's not make general statements. Some old gear has the potential to be exceptional.
