That these thingies need 3 drill holes of 3,5mm diameter to sound good?!

Where are these drill holes located?

Sorry if I've missed something, but the diagram just has one point - I assume they're evenly spaced around the distancer?

I expect spaced evenly would be best but I doubt it is crucial.

Looks to be more like $40 actually, as shipping outside of a handful of places is $20 for some reason... But yeah, enjoy. You'll be the second person to purchase a pair. I asked the first one to follow up with how well they worked for modding but he never did. He didn't come back complaining (or at all), so I assume they worked out ok. I didn't have the patience to wait three weeks to try them out myself, as I went the plumbing route, so I'm afraid I can't tell you how well they actually work, or even what they look like. However I can tell you they match nickchen's measurements, and should work if you get them done in a rigid material, the cheapest of which is alumide.

Yes , I should come back and complain, shouldn't I?  The ring is too small to hold the pad.

Nice review. My DT880 can sound awesome, but mostly because they do nothing wrong. They're quite polite. So even though the MS1000, due to the MS1's drivers, doesn't sound as good technically, they sound better musically. They sure get your feet tapping. One day the MS-Ulti is going to be mine, I'm sure (or perhaps the Magnum drivers?).

One thing about your review though. I don't find them to be bright. Did you have the punch hole mod installed? I also see that your distancers weren't lined with felt. Things may sound a bit honky because of that.

Thanks! That might have been it. The previous owner didn't like the sound with felts so I assumed it was better without it. But I also prefer a darker sound. I CB modded my DT880 and think it's too bright. (But as I've stated in another thread, it might be the K271 pads I'm using)

I've actually been contemplating an LCD-2...but all I may need is the SA5000 I left at college to cleanse my palate/thrust excrssive brightness upon me. When I directly compared the SA5000 and MS1000, they sounded almost dark, but I didn't want to skew the review so I waited a day before listening to the MS1000 again.

ApatN is right, you should have left the felt in place. And what you have listened to was technically a pair of MS1K v.1.0, they were far from sounding great in those days. The 3 drill holes in the distancers have solved the shrillness issues and have also brought back most of the mids, which were kind of recessed with undrilled distancers. And you can make them sound even darker by means of the felt lining mod (see #1 for details).

My advice for all sellers and DIY'ers: Don't forget the drill holes, they are critical to make the MS1000/MS Pro Ulti working!

Gah, guess I'm saving up for an MS Pro in that case.

Ah I forgot about those! I'll read up on them. It'd end up costing like half of the MS Pro even with wooden cups.
