AKG Q701 Review
Oct 9, 2011 at 10:24 AM Post #181 of 248
If you want the best from your AKG Q701. Get better cable. I have the two green cable that came with it and three other cables.

The best cable is the Silver 22 awg 99.99. The bass and detail is excellent.

I also purchased a silver Jensen 99.997 (not sure what awg, maybe 29) from ebay.  The third cable is a Mogami 2534 cable. Those cable have a different sound, can not say which one is better.

All three is better than the stock cable. The cheapest of the three is the Mogami 2534.

If you like those heavy Bass music, you better off getting a Monster Studio headphone or something like that. For everything else, the AKG is far better.

My set up: Computer Desktop (Asus - Xonar essence stx) Headphone output as a pre amp to Burson HA160.  (cable -  Furutech FX Alpha Silver cable)

I am new to High end Head phones. Down sized from full High end audio system. Still have my Merlin Speakers.

Current headphones:  Grado SR60,   Monster Studio,  AKG Q701, just got my Sennheiser HD800.

Can someone please recommend a headphone case for the Q701?

I'm using the Headroom HeadCase bag, which is pretty much a perfect fit -> http://www.headphone.com/accessories/carrying-cases/headcase-bag-w-shoulder-strap.php

but you said "case", so...

I'd say look at the HippoCase:

Here's a cheaper ebay offering:

Ordered a pair of white Q701 cans yesterday! Should have them today after work. :)

I'm looking forward to seeing how they compare to what I remember of the HD650 sound. I sold all my gear about 1 1/2 years ago. Really missing that Woo Audio WA6...

I doubt the FiiO E10 will drive these Q701s anywhere close to their potential, unfortunately, but it's all I've got for now. I've been hearing great things about the Matrix M-Stage pairing with the K/Q701s. I'm open to suggestions up to the $400 range. I do not that I'll be able to afford another WA6 w/ PDPS + Sophia Princess in the near future or anything else quite as nice. So I am looking for maximum bang for the buck. Open to SS and tube amps. Hybrid works too, of course.

I feel like my tastes have probably changed over the past few years, and from what I've been reading the K/Q701s sound more appealing to me now. I use IEMs all the time on the train/bus, and the Etymotics seem rather neutral and don't color the sound very much. The HD650s were very pleasing to my ears, but I would like to try something that brings out more little details, for better or worse.

Can't decide whether I should get the white or green :frowning2:

Could anyone suggest a desktop amp besides the FiiO E9 (around the same price) that would be suited to the 701s? I have a NuForce uDAC2 already, so I don't see myself buying an E7 any time soon which makes me feel the dock feature in the E9 would be a bit wasted and that there might be something else out there.

Green will definitely make it stand out from any other headphones you have. Personally, I'm a huge fan of white or white with black accents. And thus, I went with the white Q701s. :)

I am currently using them with a FiiO E10 that works alright. My M-Stage should be here either tomorrow or Thursday. A lot of people claim the M-Stage is great with the K/Q701s.

The green one is kinda of ugly in mine (and most peoples) opinion.  It's too green - looks like someone spilled ninja turtle ooze in the paint tank at the factory.  The white/black and black versions look great.

Also note that the white and green versions have a glossy finish, while the black version is matte.  Matte tends to scuff/scratch less easy.

Good to know. I would have preferred a white matte, but I'll almost always take white even if it is a little glossy.

I didn't initially realize that the white model was white/black as opposed to the original white/grey of the K701s. Seems to have quite a nice effect, with the green cable too.

Are there any phones that are like the Q701s but offer bass that feels like bass?  I'd love hearing the bass lines in Rush, and likewise, love the bass impact on explosions while gaming.  But I'm looking for phones that have the detail of the Q701s but also not being shy on the bass either.

Usually when people ask for open headphones with extra bass Dt990s get recommeneded.

What about the 880s?  I think the 990s are a bit out of my budget?  I'll have to double check.  Also, I'm not looking for bass that is reserved to mous5 and whatnot.  Just realistic bass.  For both music and games.

The 880s should have more bass.
