Sometimes I think i'd like the Annie pads on the K702 more than the Q701. To my ears (and preferences) the Q701 doesn't need any more warmth.
Still hope I can try out some K712 pads if AKG actually gives them a new part #

Wouldn't that sound pretty similar to the Q701 though?

Yep, you got it

My guess is that it would still be a little warmer than the Q701 (stock pads) but yet still with maybe slightly more treble and upper mids.
Kind of no point really.

I must be only the 2nd person to not like Annie pads on the Q701.

What's interesting is that I have a treble happy K400 and the Annie pads are pretty good with it. Another K400 I have is WAY too dark with them! EP vs LP I guess. The trebly K400 with stock pads is actually thinner sounding than even the K702 I think.

If you want a little fuller and smoother sounding Q701, that's the K712 + angled pads.  It's a nice combination.

Maybe when they drop in price a little. It does sound interesting. I just can't stomach paying $400 for a K712. Maybe if I could get rid of my Q701 but it's never going anywhere.
Q701 is pretty smooth overall to me until I put on some bad Japanese Pop music or whatever. I can't say that I ever get fatigued with the Q701 ever though.
For the really annoying/bright recordings the HD-650 is a little better. I think there's only maybe 3 or 4 albums I have that could possibly be fatiguing on the Q701.

What's really amazing to me is how warm the Q701 can sound with very warm recordings. These seem kind of rare though and not sure what exactly causes them to sound this way on the recording.

I'm kind of addicted to the upper mids of the Q701, but a little less treble wouldn't ruin the Q701. Not that it needs it!

It's still very possible that i'd love the K712. I'm actually not a fan of the forward low mids of the Annie. The low mids of the Q701 are perfect.

My HD-650 is close to being very warm but yet never sounds congested, too dark or muffled. Not sure how they pulled that off. Maybe the K712 does this for me.

Q701/K702 are now made in China and price will go down ^^

For the K701 am very happy with ist openness and airyness. And i do like the quality of the bass, i just think it needs more of it. So I am not very keen on chnaging too much of its character. I dont need it to be a firend to all music cause not all music is that well recorded.

When in In. Looked up the freq responses of the k701, q701 and now k712pro I think akg not only went ahead with adding more bass but also less treble. The last aspect I am not sure of.

So I hope the gel pads will add some bass and not smooth out the treble too much. I found the pads on thomann.de.

Do we have a list of pads and parts numbers to choose from? I can see only foam or gell pads thomann.de

You will lose some air and treble and it will sound more warm, dark, and intimate.  It's not just a bass boost.  http://www.head-fi.org/t/655082/akg-q701-vs-akg-k702-65th-anniversary-comparison-review

Everyone has been getting their pads directly from the AKG parts department.  The part number is 5021871.  I'm not sure if they ship to your location though.

Do a search in this thread for "frank akg parts" and it will give you the contact info for the parts.

No, the K712 has a different number.

Maybe in the past I used to think like you, but then I saw AKG changing the K702 drivers part number from 2400Z00070 (6/09 manual), to 2400Z00080 (10/12 manual). Looks like they're going to use the newest drivers available when they'll finish the 80s drivers. Today the K-712 newest driver is the 2400Z00090, but tomorrow, or the next year we'll probably see the 90s drivers mount in the Chinese new K701/2, and so on. Beside, AKG never claim they change the drivers!
